"The Beauty of Gray" is the third single off Live's debut album, Mental Jewelry. It was only released in the United States and failed to chart.
The CD single contained an edited version of the song (the version released as a promo was the same as the album track) plus a live version of the song and live versions of the previous two singles and an album track, "Good Pain". "Pain Lies on the Riverside" and "Operation Spirit" were recorded live at The Chameleon in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on January 24, 1992. "The Beauty of Gray" and "Good Pain" were recorded live at The Ritz in New York City on April 24th, 1992.
