The Beast with Two Backs is the seventh full-length studio album by British goth rock band Inkubus Sukkubus. It contains 12 original tracks and a cover of 'Can't Get You out of My Head' by Kylie Minogue with altered lyrics that more accurately reflect the band's aesthetics. The cover was designed by Tony McKormack, a core member of the band.
The album's title refers to a British slang term for sexual intercourse: 'To make the beast with two backs'. Many believe the phrase is from Shakespeare's Othello: "I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs." However, the term dates back to at least 1532 (Shakespeare was born in 1564), and can be found in François Rabelais', 'Gargantua and Pantagruel':
"In the vigour of his age he married Gargamelle, daughter to the King of the Parpaillons, a jolly pug, and well-mouthed wench. These two did oftentimes do the two-backed beast together, joyfully rubbing and frotting their bacon 'gainst one another, in so far, that at last she became great with child of a fair son, and went with him unto the eleventh month..."
—Francois Rabelais, Gargantua and Pantagruel
The same phrase, or some variation of it, occurs several times in James Joyce's Ulysses (novel).
"The Beast with Two Backs" is also the name of a ballet recently conceived by Wesleyan University student Nina Macintosh and Z Behl performed by the Wesleyan dance troupe. Music by Sam Dishy.
