"The Beast in the Cave" is a short story by American horror fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft written in 1905, when Lovecraft was fourteen. It was first published in the June 1918 issue of the amateur press journal the Vagrant.

In the story, a man touring a cave gets lost and hears a monstrous creature. Though he is unable to find out what it is, he kills it with a stone as it approaches him. He finds his group, who upon retracing the man's steps discover that this creature had been apelike. The creature speaks and is revealed to be a deformed human.
