The Bears on Hemlock Mountain (1952), written by Alice Dalgliesh and illustrated by Helen Sewell, is children's novella based, according to the author's note, on an old Pennsylvania tall tale. It won a 1953 Newbery Honor.

Jonathan is an 8-year-old farm boy with many aunts, uncles, and cousins, all living around a hill named Hemlock Mountain. His Uncle James teaches him love and respect of wildlife, but his deepest wish is to see a bear. This resolve is tested when his mother sends him over Hemlock Mountain one day to fetch a large iron pot. She doesn't believe bears live on the hill, but Jonathan's becomes convinced as night falls on his return journey.
