The Atreyee English Medium School, Balurghat, affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) was established in 1976. Initially classes were held at the District Library,near Balurghat College. Later it was shifted to Mongalpur,in the western part of Balurghat which is its present & permanent location. In Balurghat, it is colloquially referred to as KG School.

It has classes from Nursery to Class XII. It is a co-educational school.The uniform for boys is maroon trousers and white shirt with maroon tie ('A' is to be inscribed at the front, with a similarly-lettered school-badge). For girls up to 7th standard,its maroon skirt & white shirt with maroon tie & 8th standard onwards, sari in maroon & white combination — with black shoes and white socks(for both boys & girls).

The first batch of students who appeared for board exams for Class-X was in the year 1986. Subsequently that batch passed their Class-XII board exams in the year 1988. All the students had to opt for Science stream, as there were no other steams offered at that time. Arts stream for students of class XII was started in the year 1993 with a lone student opting for it in that year, who subsequently passed out in 2003.
