Founded by Dr. Solomon S. Huebner of The Wharton School in 1927, the institution now known simply as The American College began as The American College of Life Underwriters. Huebner was a giant in the development of economic theory. His theory of Human Life Value theory forms the basis of all insurance thinking today. It was his vision for a college-level professional education program for insurance agents that led to the creation of this institution.

The College strives to raise the level of professionalism for financial practitioners through advanced education and a commitment to ethics. When the institution began,programs focused exclusively on providing education to individuals working in the life insurance industry. The Chartered Life Underwriter™ (CLU®) designation was the first credential offered by The College –an educational program that continues to enhance the career success of financial professionals over 80 years later.

Annually, The American College educates approximetly 40,000 students prodominently through distance education. Twenty full time faculty members and experts within their areas reside on campus for student assistance. is one of the nation’s leading distance education institutions and offers an array of specialized designation programs, Master of Science degrees in several disciplines and customized continuing education programs for those pursuing career success in financial services.

The American College was bought in the summer of 2007 by the Jack M Barrack Hebrew Academy.


The eighth and current President and CEO Larry Barton, PhD, joined The College in 2002.

Current programs of study include:

  • LUTCF® (Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow, or simply LUTC Fellow)® A fundamental product knowledge and sales skills training program for persons interested in pursuing a career in insurance and financial services.


  • FSS(Financial Services Specialist)Provides professionals in the insurance, securities, and banking industries with the high-impact sales skills and introductory technical knowledge associated with the financial planning process.


  • CFP®(Certified Financial Planner Educational Curriculum)® This curriculum fulfills the educational requirement necessary to sit for the CFP Certification examination.


  • CLU®(Chartered Life Underwriter)® For individuals interested in attaining advanced knowledge about life insurance and financial planning.


  • ChFC® (Chartered Financial Consultant)® This program provides students with advanced knowledge on a comprehensive range of financial planning issues.


  • CASL® (Chartered Advisor for Senior Living)® This program provides a broader understanding of the special needs, issues and decisions facing today’s seniors.


  • RHU® (Registered Health Underwriter)® This program prepares financial advisors to assist clients with all their health care needs, including medical, disability income, and long-term care insurance.


  • REBC®(Registered Employee Benefits Consultant)® A series of specialty courses that enable financial advisors to succeed in the U.S. employee benefits market.


  • CLF®(Chartered Leadership Fellow)® Students completing this course of study gain a fundamental understanding of leadership, organizational structures and management of financial services organizations.


  • CAP® (Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy)® For individuals interested in advising wealthy individuals on how to reach their philanthropic and wealth management goals.


  • MSM(Master of Science in Management) An advanced degree program that focuses on leadership and financial services organizations.


  • MSFS(Master of Science in Financial Services) An advanced degree program that focuses on financial planning topics, including business succession planning, pensions, charitable giving and asset management.


The Campus is located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, i a building made possible through the generosity of the Million Dollar Round Table. MDRT Foundation Hall houses all American College divisions including: Academics, Advancement, Alumni Relations and Human Capital, Assessment, Executive, Finance, IT, Marketing, and Student Success.

  • A digital broadcast quality TV Studio with in-house editing and sound recording capabilities
  • Brand new Learning Center complete with classroom and meeting spaces for internal events as well as external companies to take advantage of. Includes a lunch room facility and coffee bar.
  • State of the art distance education program technology featuring Blackboard as one helpful learning platform.
  • Student advisors are available to provide guidance on programs, continuing education, and college sponsored evenents through a toll free number and email enhancing the student experience.
  • Each year The College recognizes its strong supporters at its annual President's Circle Dinner. Previous locations include: The Kennedy Space Center, San Francisco Asian Art Museum, U.S.S. Missouri at Pearl Harbor, Rainbow Room in NY at Rockefeller Center, and The Sears Tower in Chicago.
  • Center for Customized Corproate Training
  • Center for Ethics in Financial Services-The American College Center for Ethics in Financial Services is the only academic ethics center that focuses exclusively on the financial services industry. The Center for Ethics in Financial Services promotes ethical behavior through program offerings that go beyond the “rules” of market conduct in an effort to help executives and producers be more sensitive to ethical issues and think more critically about ethical solutions.
