[edit] Plot
The Ambulance is a Hitchcock-style thriller in which a man (Roberts) witnesses the kidnapping of a young woman and investigates her disappearance, much to the disdain of a gum-chomping policeman (James Earl Jones).
Josh Baker meets a very special woman, Cheryl, in the streets of New York. Suddenly she collapses, and she's picked up by an ambulance. When Josh wants to visit her in the hospital, it appears that she hasn't been admitted in the hospital. Josh follows the roommate of Cheryl, and she disappears after a ride in the same ambulance. It's up to Josh to solve the secret behind this strange vehicle.
This is excellently intelligent and satirical B-movie thriller fare from Cohen, creator of Q: The Winged Serpent and It's Alive. A rather unhealthy New York ambulance delivers its ailing patients to a hospital which is doing a roaring trade in used bodies. Roberts heads up the colourful and quirky cast as the Marvel artist who teams up with newshound Buttons in the fight against the paramedical pillagers. Cartoon legend Stan Lee cameos as himself, adding a bit of cult appeal for graphic-art devotees. An edgy score by Chattaway keeps things moving along briskly throughout.
