[edit] Plot Summary
Jerry and Elaine are flying home from St. Louis to New York after Jerry has performed a show and Elaine has visited her sister. When their flight home gets canceled, Jerry and Elaine rebook on another flight with one seat left in first class and one in coach. After a brief tense moment during which Jerry explains that he cannot fly coach since he's flown first class before, Elaine gets cramped into coach and Jerry parties in first class with a model. Due to their having to rebook and a rerouting of their flight, George and Kramer go between JFK and LaGuardia to pick them up. When they settle on an airport George meets a convict and Kramer sees a former roommate of his (Grossbard) who owes him $240 from twenty years ago. Kramer hatches a scheme to get the money back that involves him and George buying tickets for the man's flight and boarding it.
[edit] Trivia
Trivia sections are discouraged under Wikipedia guidelines. The article could be improved by integrating relevant items and removing inappropriate ones. |
- Labeled forever as the stinky airplane bathroom guy in this, his most well-known cameo appearance, Larry Charles is usually noticed by Seinfeld fans because of that. His only comment to that, from the DVD commentary for this episode: "I looked good in that."¹ Charles made two other oncamera cameos, both of them with Larry David, in The Trip, Part 2, and The Pilot, Part 2.
- Larry David can be heard off-screen claiming to have ordered the kosher meal.
- Annie Koren, who usually appears as Jack Klompus' wife, appeared as a passenger in this episode.
- Several exterior shots show the livery of the plane Jerry and Elaine are in. It is clearly Southwest Airlines aircraft N527SW (http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=0460969). However, SWA does not fly into either LaGuardia or JFK, and SWA does not have first class. However, the interior shows that the airline is really Trans World Airlines (TWA).
- When George is engaged in the argument with the shackled prisoner, he responds "But you are, Blanche! You are in the shackles!". This is a parody of a quote by Bette Davis, said to Joan Crawford (in a similar situation), from the film Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?.
[edit] Quotes
- George: I'm going to stop in the gift shop to pick up a copy of Time magazine. There's a blurb about Jerry, and I think he mentioned my name.
- Prisoner : Gotta get my Time magazine. I never miss my Time magazine.
- Marshal: Okay, let's get your magazine and get out of here.
(George and the prisoner both reach the magazine rack and George grabs the last copy of Time just as the prisoner reached for it)
- Prisoner: Hey, I was going to take that.
- George: Gee, I'm sorry. I got here first.
- Prisoner: I don't care when you got here. I want the magazine.
- George: You don't understand--there's a blurb about me in this magazine.
- Prisoner: A blurb? You're a blurb! Check out the cover, idiot!
(George looks at the cover and sees a mugshot of the prisoner with the word "Caught!" underneath it)
- Prisoner: I want the magazine!
- George: Uh...no.
- Prisoner: If I wasn't in these shackles...
- George: But you are, Blanche! You are in the shackles!
- (Now stuggling to break free of the marshals) Prisoner: You little son of a....
- (Chuckling) George: Oh, I can't wait to read my Time magazine! Last copy, too. Maybe I'll read it tomorrow, in the park...it's supposed to be a bee-yoo-tiful day! Have a nice life....sentence, that is!
[edit] Oddities
- Jerry and Elaine are told by the ticket agent that there are only two seats available on the plane, one in first class, the other in coach. However, during the flight Elaine sneaks into the first-class section and tries to sleep in an empty seat, indicating that there were more than two seats available. If the person in that seat had not taken the flight, chances are she could have had the seat if Jerry had asked.
- Basic airline rules are ignored in this episode: The man sitting next to Elaine holds his luggage on his lap despite rules requiring all carry-on luggage to be overhead or under the seat; Elaine is told the only meal left is a kosher meal, though flight attendants normally would have the passenger who ordered the kosher meal marked and deliver it to him first.
- At one point the flight is rerouted from JFK to Laguardia Airport. During this time, the passengers experience a meal service and time to sleep despite the short distance between these two airports.
- Surprising that a criminal whose arrest makes the cover of Time Magazine would be in an airline washroom without any of his security escort around.
