The Advocate is a student-run Extracurricular newsmagazine at Albuquerque Academy, an independent school located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Advocate is published every five weeks during the academic year, totaling seven issues per school year. Each issue, which usually is between 16-24 pages long, consists of five sections: Opinion, News & Features, Cover Story, The Arts, and Sports. The Advocate is distributed in paper to students, faculty, and staff, and electronically through its website to alumni and parents. Year after year, the publication received numerous awards in the Tribune Lighthouse Awards for high school journalism.
Due to the size of its staff, the publication is able to publish a broad range of stories. The Advocate's editorial board has recently moved toward covering more local, school-related issues rather than concentrating on national issues, about which one could read elsewhere.
Recently, The Advocate has progressed beyond a traditional newspaper, offering issues, as well as audio and video, online. Although the editorial board has pushed for a publicly accessible website, the administration has chosen to restrict access to students, faculty, and alumni, out of concern for the privacy of students.
The Advocate prints articles about what is going on in the student community and around the school, about extracurricular activities, and about the world outside of school.
