Talk:Thermal airship
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Question - Why is the performance and hence operating window of thermal airships so poor, given that helium airships can acheive speeds of 60 mph and greater. Is it to do with the non rigid and low pressure envelope acting as an airbrake? 80.6.18.7 12:59, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- It's because thermal airships of the type described in the article are not highly pressurised. In fact they cannot be highly pressurised because they have a large hole at the bottom to let the hot air in. As a result, high speeds (or high winds for that matter) cause them to deflate. -- Derek Ross | Talk 19:31, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
