Michael is not an architect, but a licensed contractor who speacilizes in the renovation of Victorian era buildings. It says in Chapter 2 (his back story) that he was never good at math. If I'm not mistaken this reflects Anne Rice's own past as she wanted to be an architect and most of Curry's traits and characteristics. I'm going to edit this if no one has a problem.
