[edit] Critical hit?
This film was hardly a critical hit in Vietnam. Its winning the Golden Kite Award was quite controversial [1][2]. It was criticized as "lacking Vietnamese-ness" [3] and the director had to defend his film against allegations of politicization from both within and without Vietnam [4]. - It was indeed controversial but it was also very successful. I guess it should be mentioned there were conflicting views (as always) but I saw a lot of good reviews and I know for one that the audience response was largely positive. Also it has received acclaim abroad as well so I didn't mean solely in terms of in Vietnam. Also, do the Golden Kites themselves really speak for the people? if anything I see a lot of articles talking about how meaningless they are. As with any movies I'm sure some critics liked it and some didn't, but in general I saw a positive response both with audiences and critics.Annamite tonkinese 00:27, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- And I also want to add that Vietnam's decision to have it represent Vietnam for the best foreign film category at the Oscars should also have some weight. A negative or even scathing review from a critic or two hardly negates the success of the film as a whole.Annamite tonkinese 00:45, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
