Talk:The Thing That Should Not Be
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The song wasn't really based on the "Call of Cthulhu" tale, but on "Shadow Over Innsmouth". I've changed the article to reflect this, and also added a few more links connecting the song to Lovecraft's work. --Miguel1626 17:35, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
I consider the song borderline early Death Metal. Drumwork, guitars ,everything stray away from the general thrashy sound of metallica towards an even heavier direction.
[edit] Tuning
Is the tuning really 1 1/2 steps down? The song never goes below 1 step down and this can be achieved by a drop tuning instead of a down tuning. Countless tablatures say that it's in Drop D, but, more importantly, a Guitar World issue's CD video of Kirk clearly shown him playing in a drop tuning. Therefore: D minimum pitch + drop tuning = Drop D. I shall change the article accordingly. 74.13.146.26 22:11, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
The GW issue with Kirk has a quote of Kirk saying it's a step and a half down, if I recall correctly. I'm going to go try to find the issue.64.90.217.245 21:55, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
Okay, according to http://members.tripod.com/~badseed_08/primers/tunings.html the song is one step down. And remember, tabs on the internet are not official. They're based on the author's interpretation of the song. Also, watching the Live Shit performance of the songs shows that they're clearly using the standard "power chord" hand formation, which they would not be using in Drop D tuning. He's using the power chord hand formation on the GW video too. He uses his index and pinky to do power chords, which doesn't spread out his hand as much and gives the illusion of barring, but if you pay attention to the intro, you can see him move his index finger from the second fret of the A-string, which he wouldn't do in Drop-D. Until a real source can be found saying it's in Drop D, I'm changing it to 1 step down. 64.90.217.245 22:03, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
