- "The Snark," the name of a fictitious movie theater in the novel is likely a spoof of the Clark Theater, an old movie theater in 1950s Chicago.
- "Blueberry Park," is likely Newberry Park, speaker's site for the Haymarket Anarchists in the historical labor movement in Chicago.
- "Lower North Aufzoo Street" is likely Lower Wacker Drive in Chicago's Loop, which runs along the Chicago River.
- One of the oddball traits of Walter's father is a habit of waiting until an avocado's skin was black and the flesh was very soft before eating. Ironically, this is in fact the way to determine ripeness of a Hass avocado
- Unsure, but is the existence of orangutans a reference to Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue?
