Talk:The Lady with the Dog (short story)

[edit] Analysis
I'd like to add an analysis section or some such while avoiding OR. If anyone wants to jump in feel free.
Possible themes:
Comparison & contrast w/ Anna Karenina (may have drawn on)
both feature young lady named Anna, married to bureaucrat, engaged in adulterous affair
Unlike Tolstoy's work, Chekhov's doesn't moralize (even evokes empathy with adulterers) Tolstoy was "most bothered" by the story
Autobiographical nature of story Chekhov was about Gurov's age & like him had just fallen in love for first time (Olga Knipper)
Lack of resolution
"You are right in demanding that an artist approach his work consciously, but you are confusing two concepts: the solution of a problem and the correct formulation of a problem. Only the second is required of the artist" (letter to Alexei Suvorin) (are any of Chekhov's other stories similarly left unresolved?)
Chekhov's ability to use minute details to tell a larger story
use of colors
objects such as headless horseman, grey fence
the lovers' situation with respect to contemporary cultural attitudes etc.
Plenty of sources but I'm not sure just how to organize and present it. Gr8white (talk) 21:34, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
