[edit] Uh, "Generally follows the plot"? No.

I had a laugh when I read that this story "generally follows the plot" of the book. The departures are severe. Much of the original is lost and much is invented. This film is scarcely like the original...its changes and rewrites are perhaps more radical as the 1959 Cushing adaptation. I've expanded the changes section and changed the description.
