What's Crossplay? "In the simplest sense, story missions are single-player shooting with an exception: Naturally intelligent human opponents take the place of A.I. There are two types of players: Elites and skirmishers. Elites are gamers playing the game in story mode. They're beefed up, heavily armored, and heavily armed. They have to be able to hold their own against a swarm of skirmish players. Skirmishers are gamers who typically play on multiplayer maps: well-trained, rank-and-file soldiers playing primarily to have some quick fun and increase their rank through defeating the occasional Elite. Skirmish players can also invade story maps and "possess" A.I.s ala Agent Smith in The Matrix." It's a really good read, there is also a new trailer available.

So basically, crossplay is a type of multiplayer. The developer's attempt to coin a new term is just a gimmick. If you play offline, then it's a standard fps. If you play online, other players assume control of NPCs, presumably with different types of skills than the main player -- which makes this a derivative of Team Fortress or any other class-based fps game type. I'm not sure how much sense this makes from a playing standpoint, however, since you're not pitting teams against each other but rather one person versus many -- which implies that the 1 is going to be much more powerful than the others. How many people would really be interested in being body count fodder for another player, much less having a high 1:n ratio of players where this would significantly impact the experience of the main player? I'm betting that most people would prefer to play as the main character, which leaves the online experience more or less identical to the offline one. A system like this would have been cool to see for a game like Thief, where the goals, skills, and difficulty are completely different for each side, but in a straight fps where the goal is to simply kill the other guy, what's the point?
