[edit] Proposed merge

This article does not need to be merged with Janissary. It is in terrible shape at the moment but could be expanded and linked to the main article. In addition to Jason Goodwin's book Lords of the Horizons already cited, Godfrey Goodwin's The Janissaries (1994) has a chapter called "The Auspicious Event" (pp. 214-228).
