Survivor: The Amazon was the sixth incarnation of the popular television reality show Survivor. It was filmed in 2002 and 13 episodes aired weekly in the United States on CBS from February 13 - May 11, 2003.
Sixteen people were sent to the Amazon to win one million dollars. The two initial tribes were the all-female Jaburu (named for a native stork) and the all-male Tambaqui (a native fish). They were eventually merged into the Jacaré (Portuguese for "alligator") tribe. It started out and ended as a battle of the sexes. The winner of Survivor: The Amazon was Jenna Morasca, a 21-year-old swimsuit model from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania defeating Matthew Von Ertfelda by a vote of 6-1. The season finale including the announcement of the winner and a live reunion of all the season's contestants at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, on David Letterman's Late Show stage which was decorated to look like the set in the Amazon.
The season is noted for having the first reality show contestant with a disability, the hearing impaired Christy Smith.
Another notable moment in this season was a challenge that tested players' endurance against temptation. While all the players were standing on a pillar, in a typical endurance Immunity challenge, the players were told that they'd be tempted with various rewards for hopping off voluntarily. Almost immediately, Jenna Morasca and Heidi Strobel offered to take off all of their clothes if they were provided with chocolate and peanut butter. Probst complied with their request, and a very naked Jenna and Heidi exited the challenge and ate a plate of Oreo cookies and peanut butter. Their escapades earned them a cover shot and a nude pictorial in Playboy-a spread that earned her another million dollars.

[edit] Elimination notes
- Ryan - Along with Daniel, was given most of the blame for losing immunity for Tambaqui on the balance beam. He was also viewed (again along with Daniel) as being too lazy around camp, but since Daniel was considered the lesser of two evils, Ryan was voted off (4-3-1).
- Janet - Janet struggled with feeling ill during the very first episode, and it seemed to carry into the second. Additionally, a granola bar was discovered at camp, and Janet was accused (by tribemate Jeanne) of smuggling it into camp (5-1-1-1).
- Daniel - He didn't get along with Roger and some of the other men. He never redeemed himself from the lazy image he had garnered in the first episode (6-1).
- Joanna - An alliance of four was spawned (Jenna-Heidi-Shawna-Deena) that didn't include Joanna. Some of the younger girls felt they were being persecuted by Joanna for being good-looking, while Deena considered her a physical threat. Her religious preaching and rudeness to Christy annoyed some tribe members. Even though Shawna implored her alliance to vote her out, Joanna took the fall (4-2-1).
- Jeanne - The tribes were shuffled and the new Tambaqui tribe lost immunity. It appeared that the women were sticking together to vote off Butch and the men planned on ousting Jeanne. Though Heidi had agreed to vote with the girls, Dave convinced Heidi to join the men in voting off Jeanne, whom Heidi felt she could not trust (4-2).
- Shawna - Shawna's demise truly began when she wanted to throw in the towel. This seemed to diminish the loyalty Jenna, Heidi and Deena had for her. Though she recovered at the tribal switch, she was beginning to form a relationship with Alex with the objective of eliminating Matt. Deena and Rob formed an alliance, voting out Shawna (4-2).
- Roger - Before the merge, the new Jaburu tribe made an alliance (also to include Heidi) to take out the Tambaqui men. When both tribes merged, Roger irritated the women with his sexist views and annoyed many of the men with his arrogance. Even though Dave was the first target, Jenna and Heidi convinced Deena to take out Roger due to the fact that he may not vote for a woman in a man/woman final two scenario. Therefore, he was voted off (7-3).
- Dave - One of the remaining two who didn't vote for Roger, Dave was both outside the alliance and seen as an incredible physical and social threat. He was the first member of the jury (8-1).
- Deena - Though she was part of the majority alliance, and the group planned on voting for Matt, Deena plotted against Alex to have him voted out. This angered Jenna, Heidi and Alex. She threw the final round of the immunity challenge to Matt, and was voted off and the second member of the jury (6-2)
- Alex - In a final four alliance with Rob, Jenna, and Heidi, Alex told Rob that when it got down to four, Alex would join the women and vote off Rob. In response, Rob got together with Matt, Christy, and Butch to take out his former alliance. He was seen as a threat, was voted off and became the third member of the jury (4-3).
- Christy - Christy refused to quickly commit to either the men or the women. When Jenna gave Heidi immunity at tribal council, Matt and Rob decided to side with the girls to vote out the wild card. To her surprise, Christy was voted off and was the fourth member of the jury (4-2). She made a promising statement that she will never vote Jenna or Heidi (nicknaming them as her "evil, wicked stepsisters" as a nod to Cinderella) in the final-a promise that she will soon break.
- Heidi - Neither of the women helped the men rebuilding the burned shelter, which angered the men. However, Heidi appeared to be better in the challenges than an increasingly sick Jenna. Heidi was voted off and became the fifth member of the jury (3-2).
- Butch - When Jenna won immunity, Matt and Rob decided to stick to their alliance and vote for Butch. Even though Jenna said that she was interested in siding with Butch, she turned to the two other men and ousted Butch to be the sixth member of the jury (3-1).
- Rob - Jenna won the final immunity despite Rob's attempts to make a deal with her. She professed she was "taking the threat with her," as she wanted the jury to believe she was bold, but she eliminated Rob on the grounds that she knew he would beat her. Jenna took Matt to the finals while Rob became the seventh and final member of the jury (1-0).
- Matthew - Matt was considered by the jury to be dependent on Rob and played more of a survival game than a strategic one. His responses to most of the questions weren't direct or well-spoken. Only Butch voted for him.
- Jenna - Jenna, the only female in the final four, was considered to be the smarter, more strategic player despite ailing since Heidi's departure. Her responses to the questions were strong and clear. She won in an overwhelming 6-1 victory with the votes of Rob, Heidi, Christy, Alex, Deena, and Dave, making her the youngest person ever to win the game (21 years old).
