Runaway 2: The Dream of the Turtle (or Runaway: The Dream of the Turtle for the Nintendo DS) is a point and click adventure game released by Péndulo Studios, S.L. in 2006. The game follows the long tradition of two-dimensional adventure games like the first two installments of the Broken Sword series. It is expected to become a huge hit in countries like France and Germany, where the first game in what is currently a two-part series was very popular.
The French version of the game was the first available for purchase, followed shortly by the German version, both published in fall 2006. Other versions like the original Spanish version and the English localizations were kept on hold until 2007 due to publishing issues, most notably with its homeland, Spain, where a special collector's edition was released in order to please the fans.
Runaway 2 has been released on CD-ROM, DVD-ROM and Nintendo DS.

[edit] Story
Brian Basco is on vacation in Hawaii with his girlfriend Gina, after the couple fell in love during their adventures in Runaway: A Road Adventure, the first game in this two-part adventure. Gina is excited about taking a flying boat trip to see the beautiful (but fictional) Tiki Falls on Mala Island, and Brian reticently agrees to the sightseeing excursion. Buxom Gina and now somewhat hip Brian hop on board a rickety old PBY Catalina run by Platypus Tours, but things take a turn for the worse, setting the couple on a whole new set of exotic adventures which are not actually finished during the game itself and are yet to be resolved in the third installment in the series. The third installment, Runaway : A Twist of Fate will not be a direct sequel to Runaway 2: The Dream of The Turtle.
[edit] Characters
Brian Basco, the only player-controlled character, is a doctoral candidate in Physics at Berkeley. Brian broke out of his nerdy shell after going through so many adventures and meeting so many interesting characters in Runaway: A Road Adventure. He will stop at nothing to save the woman he never thought he would have, Gina.
Gina Timmins is the stunningly attractive girl Brian almost ran over with his car and immediately fell in love with in Runaway 1. After all the help Brian gave her in the first Runaway, it's no surprise that they're now a couple on vacation together in lovely Hawaii.
Sushi Douglas is a hip multi-millionaire computer hacker who helps Brian out whenever he gets into a jam that requires technical assistance. Brian has a high IQ, but Sushi has the technological know-how to get Brian and his beloved Gina out of harm's way.
Lokelani is a hot and racy new character who spices things up while tending the bar on Luana Beach.
Camille is a secondary character based upon a real-life French Runaway 2 contest winner[1].
[edit] References and in-jokes
- In the Luana Beach bar, Lokelani mentions one of her boyfriends was called Peter and went "down under" to make a movie trilogy for three years, and she was the make-up artist. This is a reference to Peter Jackson, and the making of The Lord of the Rings film trilogy in New Zealand.
- In the Tiki Temple on Maui Island, Brian takes what he thinks is neuralizer and says he has "seen one of these in the movies". He is referring to Men in Black, and even puts on a pair of sunglasses when attempting to use it, just like in the film.
- When talking to Joshua on Maui island, when you get Joshua agitated he pleads with you not to try and take his Space:1999 trading cards.
- In the Tiki Temple on Maui island, Brian finds a body partially crushed under a spherical stone. On top of the stone is a Fedora hat, and lying next to the body is a bullwhip and leather bag. Brian comments that he 'couldn't be a very good archaeologist, an obvious reference to Indiana Jones, and specifically the trap at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark when Indiana Jones tries to retrieve the Hovito Idol. Brian himself comments that he is going "To play to Indiana Jones" when he's about to use the whip for movement.
- During the transmission from the Trantorians to Professor Simon, the room the Trantorians are in bears some resemblance to both the carbon freezing chamber on Bespin in The Empire Strikes Back and parts of the Death Star, specifically the Emperors throne room.
- In a point of the game, Brian is in the treasure hold of a pirate ship, some of the items there are from the first game such as the crucifix, and others are well-known pieces of art such as the Mona-Lisa. What appears to be the vinyl sleeve of The Beatles album A Hard Day's Night is also visible among the items of treasure.
- The final chapter of the game, Hidden Beacon of Avernus, appears to be almost entirely lifted from the prolific Monkey Island series of adventure-games.
- One of the questions asked in the game is on a pirate named Captain Swallow which is proclaimed to escape an island using turtles tied to his leg and not being saved by a ship of rum smuggler's. This is most-likely to be a reference on Jack Sparrow from the trilogy of Pirates of the Caribbean.
- Otto, the pilot of the aircraft at the beginning states that he had flown during WWII, strangely enough his bag that falls from the treetops has an eagle symbol similar to that used in the German armed forces of the time.
- In the closing sequence, Professor Simon is seen wearing a T Shirt bearing the mission patch for STS 7, a mission using the Space Shuttle Challenger, the first mission to have a female crew member aboard a shuttle. The crew consisted of Robert Crippen, Frederick H. Hauck, Norman E. Thagard, Sally Ride and John M. Fabian.
- The television series Northern Exposure is referenced not once but twice. First, the fictional town of Cicely (where the series takes place) is mentioned and second the character "Archibald" is no other than "Adam" (played by Adam Arkin), sharing his character traits of being a grumpy, cynical, bare-footed, famous chef, who is living in the woods.
