The Dreamwright is one of two science fantasy novels by Geary Gravel based on and set within the Might and Magic universe. Published by Del Rey Books in 1995, it was planned to act as the first episode of a three-book series, two of which were released. It was followed by The Shadowsmith. Although the series does not take place in any of the fictional worlds present within the games, it is set in the same universe and makes close reference to many plot devices present in the series from Might and Magic V onwards.

[edit] Plot summary

The story's protagonist is a mountain boy named Hitch. After a close encounter with a hob known as a stonecrush, he encounters the dilapidated hut of an old woman, whom he tends to until her death. Following this, he traverses the wilderness until he comes upon a beach, where he witnesses a golden egg fall from the sky and land powerfully in a nearby lake.

Meanwhile, Diligence, the young daughter of Herstad - one of the eight kings of a land named the Wheel - is forced into traveling north to the land of the Unseen Wall to meet with her estranged mother, the sorceress Amonwelle. She travels with a company of guards and an elderly scholar named Pomponderant, passing by the lake just as the golden egg crashes into its waters.

Hitch investigates the egg and discovers a living being inside, dressed in golden armor. He narrowly saves the strange hatchling, and proceeds to join Diligence's caravan. Numerous adventures follow as the caravan proceeds north to the Unseen Wall, where they meet with Amonwelle and discover legends of the Ancients, the Wielders and the dark intentions of the Shadowsmith and his minions.

[edit] Original plans

The Dreamwright was planned as the first of a series of three novels acting as a prequel to the events of Might and Magic VI, which was at an early stage of development at the time of publication. However, New World Computing, the developers of the Might and Magic series, decided instead to set Might and Magic VI in the same fictional world as their Heroes of Might and Magic series, with the new game picking up where Heroes of Might and Magic II left off.

After the release of Might and Magic VI, the developers altered their contract with Geary Gravel, asking him to fulfil the three-book deal by beginning work on a new novel unrelated to the events of the previous two. Gravel declined, and was released from the contract with the help of his agent.

Even though the storyline is not closely related to the events of the Might and Magic and Heroes of Might and Magic games, it features parallel concepts such as comet-shaped starships and crystal palaces, and directly makes reference to the Ancients, the Guardians and the Wire[1] mentioned in Might and Magic V.
