The description of the original image reads as follows:
Canyonlands National Park, Utah. Stillwater Canyon and Green River, looking southwest from Green River loop of river. Brown material covering nearby parts of the White Rim is the lower part of Overlook. Orange Cliffs in the background. Henry Mountains on the right skyline. Turks Head in the Moenkupi Formation. Figure 23, U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1327. Survey Bulletin-1327
Digital File:lsw00008 ID. Lohman, S.W. 8ct
The original photo apparently was taken from Grand View Overlook in the park, probably in the early 1970s. A description of the publication in which the original was published in 1974 appears at [2].
The original was edited to focus on the smaller "theater-headed" canyons at left. The edited image was uploaded for use with the article entitled Groundwater sapping.
