The cover of the November 1979 issue of The Progressive magazine, advertising their publication of "the secret of the hydrogen bomb". (See Teller-Ulam design) The cover features a sequence from Howard Morland's drawings of the stages of a detonating hydrogen bomb.

The cover was taken from a PDF of the issue distributed by The Progressive online at http://progressive.org/?q=node/2252 . The image of the bomb itself is copyright Howard Morland (not The Progressive).

Because this cover is itself the primary illustration of a historic event (that is, the publication of a historic issue of a magazine), is being provided at a low resolution, and no free alternatives are likely available, and the copyright holder is clearly identified, I believe the use of this to illustrate the publication of this issue on the non-profit English Wikipedia falls within the "fair use" clause of U.S. copyright law. Any other usage may not be as such.

This image is of a magazine cover, and the copyright for it is most likely owned by either the publisher of the magazine or the individual contributors who worked on the cover depicted. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of magazine covers to illustrate the publication of the issue of the magazine in question with the publication name either visible on the image itself or written in the image description above, on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law.
