Though this image is subject to copyright, its use is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because:
- It's a low resolution copy of a Book.
- It doesn't limit the copyright owner's rights to sell the book in any way, in fact, it may encourage sales.
- Because of the low resolution, copies could not be used to make illegal copies of the artwork/image.
- The image is itself a subject of discussion in the article or used in the infobox thereof.
- The image is significant because it was used to promoted a notable book.
[edit] Fair Use
[edit] Fair use for The Careful Use of Compliments
This image, The Careful Use of Compliments cover.jpg, is being linked here; though the picture is subject to copyright I (Mangwanani) feel it is covered by the U.S. fair use laws because the use of a single cover "to illustrate an article discussing the book in question" is allowed. Absent of an official "series cover," it logically follows that this single cover used in conjunction with its fellows to illustrate an article on the series to which they all belong is allowable.
[edit] Licensing
This image is of a book cover, and the copyright for it is most likely owned either by the artist who created the cover or the publisher of the book. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of book covers
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Other use of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, might be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information. |
