The Burning, written by Kathryn Lasky, is the sixth novel in the series entitled Guardians of Ga'Hoole.

Soren and his band are sent to the mysterious Northern Kingdoms to gather allies and learn the art of war in preparation for the coming cataclysmic battle against the sinister Pure Ones. Gylfie and Otulissa discover new ways to fight using the books in the Glauxian brothers retreat. While in the retreat, Otulissa meets her love, Cleve. Soren and Twilight go to Moss, an old friend of Ezylryb, but Moss doesn't seem to show any sign of help. Ruby and Martin go to Stormfast island to find Hoke, another old friend of Ezylryb, he would plead passionately to the parliament, but any reinforcements would come too late. Worst of all Gylfie is captured by pirates on the return journey. Meanwhile, in the Southern Kingdoms, St. Aggies has fallen to the Pure Ones and they are using its fleck resources to plan a final invasion of The Great Ga'Hoole Tree. With the future of all Owldom in the balance, the parliament of Ga’Hoole decide to join forces with the brutal Skench and Sporn and the scattered remnants of St. Aggies who remain faithful to them. The Guardians attack with disastrous results, but just as all is lost, Gylfie leads the Frost Beaks and Kielan Artillery to the rescue.
Twilight manages to Kill Kludd, Soren's evil brother, by thrusting an ice dagger into his spine in a cave fight. Later in this series Coryn Kludd's son is told that Soren killed his father, but finds the truth in fire.
