    Released: October 1986

Every Breath You Take: The Singles was The Police's first compilation album, released in 1986. In 1990, the album was repackaged in New Zealand, Australia and Spain as Their Greatest Hits with a different cover.

According to Stewart Copeland, the vibe in the studio while recording "Don't Stand So Close to Me '86" was very good, which may have led to work on more songs. An injury occurred to him at the shoulder while playing polo, though, prevented them to continue the sessions.

[edit] Every Breath You Take: The Classics

In 1995, A&M released Every Breath You Take: The Classics to replace the original album. It features a slightly different track listing: "So Lonely" is omitted, the original version of "Don't Stand So Close To Me" replaces the 1986 recording at track 5, with the '86 version appended as track 13, and a 'New Classic Rock Mix' of "Message in a Bottle" as track 14. The DTS and hybrid SACD versions of this album, released in 2000 and 2003, respectively, include a previously unreleased version of "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da".
