Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks, known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z: Zetsubō e no Hankō!! Nokosareta Chō-Senshi Gohan to Trunks (ドラゴンボールZ 絶望への反抗!!残された超戦士・悟飯とトランクス DoragonbōruZetto Zetsubō e no Hankō!! Nokosareta Chō-Senshi • Gohan to Torankusu?, lit. "Dragon Ball Z: Resistance to Despair!! The Remaining Super-Warriors, Gohan and Trunks"), is an hour-long TV-Special (#2) that is part of the Dragon Ball Z series of anime. Originally released in Japan on February 24, 1993, between episodes 174 and 175. Bridge Entertainment's title is Gohan and Trunks. It tells the story of Future Trunks. It is unique among Dragon Ball movies/specials since it is actually based from a brief chapter in the manga, called Trunks the History - The Lone Warrior. The special changes several key plot points for drama (such as that in the manga Trunks was capable of turning Super Saiyan before Gohan's death).

[edit] Plot

The film opens with Goku's death from a Yardratian viral heart disease and the death of the Z-Fighters at the hands of Android 17 and Android 18 six months later. However, the Z-Fighters are unable to be brought back to life because the Dragon Balls are permanently unusable due to Piccolo's death. The TV Special moves 13 years into the future where we meet a 13 year old Trunks and 23 year old Gohan. They are the only hope left in defeating the androids once and for all. Gohan, who is now a Super Saiyan after witnessing the deaths of the other Z-fighters, attempts repeatedly to defeat the Androids, but is out numbered and outclassed. Gohan trains Trunks, who comes very close to becoming a Super Saiyan as well. One day, The Androids attack an amusement park, where Gohan and Trunks come to the aid of the people. Android 17 takes on Gohan while Android 18 sits back and watches. Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan and, despite a few lucky hits by Android 17, quickly takes control of the fight.

However, Android 18 joins the fight and the two androids begin to thrash Gohan. Trunks, though no match for the Androids, comes to the rescue and takes on Android 18. He manages to fight her for a minute but Android 18 dodges his attacks and toys around with him. He is defeated, but Gohan saves him from death, and they both hide in the debris. Android 17 and Android 18, unable to find them, figure they left but blow the park up anyway just in case. Gohan and Trunks survive the blast but at the cost of Gohan's left arm. Gohan recovers and resumes training Trunks. The training is stopped short when the androids attack the Capital. Trunks wants to fight, which Gohan seemingly accepts, but then knocks him unconscious because he couldn't afford for Trunks to get hurt again like before. The one-armed Gohan ambushes the Androids, and despite his handicap, puts up a long and suspenseful fight against the androids, but meets his end when the androids gang up on him and knock him to the ground and shoot ki blasts like a machine gun from the sky. Trunks is awakened when Gohan's ki vanishes. Upon searching the city, Trunks finds Gohan's dead body. The rage from within him is unleashed and Trunks transforms into a Super Saiyan.

The story moves forwards three years later and Trunks is now 16 years old. While Bulma is working on the time machine, Trunks goes off to fight the Androids. Trunks barely puts up a fight and is eventually beaten by the merely-toying Androids. He miraculously survives a large blast of ki from Android 18. Trunks awakens in his house with his mother Bulma by his side. After a brief talk, he decides to go in the time machine (once it's finally ready, which is about six months to a single year later) to give the heart medicine to Goku.

[edit] People who were not born due to Android Events

  • Goten (Goku died of a heart disease)
  • Bra (Vegeta was killed by the Androids before he could impregnate Bulma)
  • Marron (Krillin was killed by the Androids and Android 18 never had a change of heart)
  • Pan (Gohan was killed by the Androids and never met Videl)

[edit] Differences between Manga & TV Special

  • In the manga, it is seen that Trunks has the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan before the events of Gohan's death, however, in the TV special, for suspenseful reasons, Trunks becomes a Super Saiyan after seeing his mentor Gohan died at the hands of the Androids.
  • In the manga, Android 17 tells Gohan that he was only using half of his power during their fight, but in the TV special, this is not heard anywhere.

[edit] Alternate Timelines

In the future timeline of the Androids where Trunks is the last surviving member of the powerful Saiyan race, the Androids are somewhat percieved to be more evil than their future counterparts, causing destruction wherever they go just to have fun, whereas in the past timeline where Goku has been applied with the antidote for his viral heart disease, the Androids' sole reason for terror is to seek out and kill Goku, stating that it is a game.

Also, in the future timeline, Android 16 is never seen to be activated by Androids 17 and 18, but in the past timeline, the Androids activate 16 against Dr. Gero's wishes.

In the alternate timeline, Yajirobe did not go into hiding with the others, but was killed fighting the androids. While he is not seen at all in the special, a "flashback" scene during the series' Cell Saga shows his death at the hands of the androids.
