[edit] Response to your comments
Let's get something straight, I am NOT affiliated with the Black Jays in any way, shape or form. I just used the name becuase I couldn't think of a good user name. I will give you my 2 cents about the urban music scene in Toronto, since you brought it up. The city has enough talent and that's for sure. It's just like k-os said, there's so many crabs in the bucket but when one crab gets out, then they wont help others get out. The artists that have been around for about 10+ years are still on their grind, but look who they're working with...Nas, Redman, Akon, Busta Rhymes, etc. Not too many mans from Toronto can say that they've done that. Now you're talking about street cred as if it's mandatory, who gives a fuck about street cred?? Maybe Young Deuce gives a fuck, but let's look at reality...do you think American record labels and mans from the hoods of America will buy into the idea of 2 street rappers from Canada? NO! Of course Jane and Finch is one of the hardest areas of T.O., but if you look at the most successful rappers in the city, how many of them had a gangsta or street persona? Barely any. Artists like Kardinal Offishall are original (not too many can mash up hip-hop and reggae/dancehall like he can), thus he is more marketable. It ain't like he didn't put in any work (in the studio) before he got to this point in his career, but the man is about to be a millionaire (signed to Konvict, Universal Records) and set the standard for rappers in the city who want to make it big, south of the border and beyond. Don't get me wrong though, I love the underground scene that we have...mans like The Corps, Mayhem Morearty, Bishop Brigante, S.L.U.G., etc. I agree that the older and more successful artists in the city should help to develop the young'ns, but y'all shouldn't be complaining, y'all should be putting in just as much work (in the studio, not in the streets) as they did. I respect your hustle Young Deuce, make that paper...Will
