[edit] Meaning
One view of this song is that it is about missionaries who come to your door attempting to convert you to their religion. The speaker complains and explains trying to brush off the missionaries since they won't succeed.
- Sister, I'm not much a poet, but a criminal/ and you never had a chance/ Love it or leave it, you can't understand/ a pretty face but you do so carry on and on and on and on
- Preach all you want but who's gonna save me? I keep a gun on the book you gave me! Hallelujah, lock and load!
Another view is that it's a dig at scene politics and the vainer elements of the music scene. This can be heard in the lyrics: "You'll never make me leave, I'll wear this on my sleeve, You wanna follow something? Give me a better cause to lead! Just give me what I need, Give me a reason to believe..."
Another opinion on this song is that Gerard is really putting his time and effort, even his life, into comforting and helping others "So give me all your poison, and giveme all your pills, and give me all your hopeless hearts and make me ill..."
[edit] Trivia
- This song was also featured in EA Games' Need for Speed Underground Rivals for the PSP. The version of the song however has a cut during the chorus.
- The song's main chorus "So give me all your...." borrows heavily from the final movement (III) of Concerto For Piano in D Minor by Felix Mendelssohn.
- "Merci Pour le Venin", which is on the inside cover of their first album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, means "Thank You for the Venom" in French.
- The line "Sister, I'm not much a poet, but a criminal" can be seen as a reference to the Morrissey song "Sister, I'm a Poet." Gerard Way has stated that Morrissey was one of his inspirations. My Chemical Romance covered Morrissey's song, Jack the Ripper.
- When the band first started, Gerard Way made and wore a shirt that had "Thank You For The Venom" written on it, which is where the song title came from.
