[edit] Society

Like any other typical Tamil Nadu country side, Thamarankottai has it's society organized mainly on caste lines. Caste plays a vital role in social life and determines people's main occupation and thus their status. Majority of the people in this village belong to the farming community and the rest of them play supporting roles.

[edit] Population

According to the latest census done by Government of India, Thamarankottai North has 6,031 people (2,872 Males and 3,159 Females) in 1,460 households. Thamarankottai South has 4,499 people (2,156 Males and 2,343 Females) in 1,110 households.[2]

[edit] Agriculture and Economy

Agriculture has been the mainstay of the local economy. Even though this region falls under the Cauvery delta irrigation scheme, not a lot of river water reaches these fields. People have resorted to deep bore wells for irrigation. With the help of monsoons and bore well irrigation, most of the lands are farmed three times a year. Rice is the main crop, which is farmed twice. The third season will be used to farm alternative crops like Ground Nut or Lentils.

In recent times, most of the lands are being converted to Coconut farms. Unlike rice cultivation, coconut provides year round income and requires less intensive labor work. Because of the rise in production of coconut, its volatile price in domestic and international market has serious impact in the local economy of the village.

Agriculture, unable to satisfy the growing needs of the village's population, is now giving way to other occupations. Most of the local youth migrate to alien countries like UAE, Singapore and Malaysia in search of steady jobs. Educated people are migrating to cities for greener pastures.

Women Self Help Groups

In recent years there has been a lot of women self help groups(SHG) supported by State and Central governments. Till now the main activity of these groups has been micro financing.

Retail

Local retailing has been growing in volume in recent years. There has been a lot of new grocery stores and other type of retail stores in addition to small time restaurants and tea shops

[edit] Education

There is no official statistics of the literacy rate of the village. However, first person accounts indicate that the literacy rate will be above the average state rate. However, traditionally people in this village have not given primary focus to education. The situation is changing in recent years, with parents insisting that their kids complete at least college degrees. Following are the educational institutions available.

There are no dearth of temples in this village. The villagers are mostly Hindus and are normally religious. There is a small minority Muslim and Christian population.

Sivan Koil

Sivan koil is the largest one and also oldest. It's history has not been properly researched or documented. This temple is also the biggest land owner in this village, with more than 40 acres of land. A fortnight long festival is celebrated in the month of April (Chitirai in Tamil calendar). In addition to that the main deity is worshiped during all Prathosam and Sivarathries.

Thee Kuthitha Amman Koil

This is a temple in which the main god, Thee Kuthitha Amman, is worshiped in reverence to one of the woman who chose to die in the funeral fire of her husband. Even though Sati is not common in this village, this temple commands a lot of respect among local people. Every year during the first Sunday of Chitirai month, some people, who have been fasting for the previous forty days, walk through fire to get the blessings of the Amman.
