Thailand National Electronics and Computer Technology Center

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thailand's National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) is a statutory government organization under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Ministry of Science and Technology. Its main responsibilities are to undertake, support, and promote the development of electronic, computing, telecommunication, and information technologies through research and development activities. NECTEC also disseminates and transfers such technologies for contribution to the economic growth and social development in the country, following the National Economic and Social Development Plan.

NECTEC was established on September 16, 1986, initially as a project under Ministry of Science, Technology and Energy (the former name of the Ministry of Science and Technology). In December 1991, NECTEC was transformed into a specialized national center under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), a new agency following the enactment of the Science and Technology Development Act of 1991.

[edit] Criticism

As the national computer technology center, NECTEC has been criticized of its lack of information technology systems. In addition to that, NECTEC's Web site claims itself as the first HTTP server in Thailand. However, the site has been largely left obsolete, the site title still saying "2003". This forms the basis of a popular joke in Thailand's IT community, with NECTEC having the "oldest" HTTP server in Thailand.
