[edit] Support of Paul Johnson

I don't feel that the quote from Paul Johnson concerning the NAACP is appropriate in this article. Specifically, I don't think it shows anything about the views of the actual subject of this article, as there is no evidence Cochran supported the opinion of Johnson. Instead, the quote is unrelated information intended to besmirch the reputation of Thad Cochran.

I'm specifically concerned that people will misread the quote as originating from Cochran, not Johnston, because of the subtle transition of the grammatical subject from Cochran to Johnson.

This entry has recently attracted attention (notably, on the main page of Conservapedia) due to its out-of-place mention of Johnson's racism. However, instead of entering the current edit war, I would simply like to voice my strong objections to the current content.

If there are other positions on this, notably if anyone wants the quote to remain, please discuss it here... --MatthewLiberal 19:10, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

I only re-inserted it to piss off Conservapedia. I made their main page, so I'm satisfied. I don't think it belongs there... just like Trent Lott isn't necessarily a racist bigot for endorsing Strom Thurmond. However, I think the link to Johnson's entry should be there, so, in the words of MisterRational, "folks can decide for themselves." 72.204.142.42 seems to disagree... omg ShiftPlusOne 20:44, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
I reinserted the quote once with proper citation, since this was the request in the history. I do believe that if Senator Cochran is going to cite his work with segregationists in his official Senate biography, his association is notable enough for wikipedia. While I'm sure conservapedia would claim his advocacy for Johnson was a "youthful indiscretion", it is one he notes in his biography as a positive and immediate precedes mention of his work for other segregationist candidates, including one of Johnson's opponents, Charles Sullivan (in 1971)[1][2], and one of Johnson's closer allies in Brad Dye [3].
I think the current compromise works well. If someone wishes to read the article and still believe that segregation isn't racist, they can. And if someone wishes to read it and put two-and-two together a different way... that works as well. omg ShiftPlusOne 01:34, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

I deleted the little blurb about pork-barrel spending; as a percentage of GDP Legislative pork does not top 5% which, while wasteful, has nothing on Executive Branch pork and entitlement spending.
