Théophile Thoré-Bürger (1807–1869) was a French art critic of the 19th Century who discovered the work of Johannes Vermeer in 1866. Bürger published an essay attributing 66 paintings to him, although only 35 are firmly attributed to him today. He also worked on Frans Hals and was the first to describe the portrait of Malle Babbe.
