[edit] Seba Smith

You state "remove ad for podcast -- if author wants to create site dedicated to smith, perhaps we can link -- but not to an indiv. podcast" -- I suppose, this policy ought to delete the THOUSANDS of wikipedia references to the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com), a HIGHLY commercial site full of advertising that excludes vital information to people who don't take out paid subscriptions. While I would love to have a sponsor for "Mister Ron's Basement," so far, in almost 500 podcasts of public domain literature, this has been operated at my own (considerable) expense, as a thoroughly researched public service. Whatever, I give up. If you believe that an entire form of education and communication -- podcasting -- is NOT acceptable to users of Wikipedia -- who am I to argue? I will not repost my link to Seba Smith's stories, and will leave him to rest in obscurity. Thanks a heap. Enjoy your power trip and have a nice life.

[edit] Henry Dunant

Hi there, the German article about Dunant made some good progress in the last weeks, with some joint work between another user and me. It's now in the review process, and I plan to submit it to FA status vote in the near future. Perhaps it reaches FA status before Oct 30 to have it as "Article of the Day" in the German Wikipedia on the occasion of the anniversary of his death. It's English counterpart should be brought in line to adequately reflect the historical relevance of Dunant - in other words, another translation is needed here :o). Unfortunately, I will probably lack the necessary time in the near future because of a new job from the beginning of October. Though I would of course check any work done by you. Sincerely Yours, --Uwe 22:12, 29 September 2005 (UTC)

Hello. You asked me: Hello. Did you write this article? What was wrong with the language on the Danish Wikipedia? Does the original also need to be transferred to another Wikipedia. No I didn't write this article. The article has been tagged for translation on the Danish wikipedia as it hasn't been completely translated from Norwegian. hede2000 08:45, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Great minds...

...think alike. I was going to ask you about "criticism" because I wanted to remove it myself. I can criticize my ford pick-up til I'm blue in the face but that doesn't make me anti-Ford; if I have a consistent hostility toward it, well that's a different thing :). The intro on A-A is becoming more important because I've noticed people using it as a kind of template on similar articles. I'm not sure if I actually like "consistent hostility" but I can't think of anything better. Marskell 00:01, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

Oh boy—on google I get wiki sites, wiki mirrors or circumlocutions around the fact. I haven't watched Anti-American sentiment in various countries though maybe I should as it comes up early. How about this: "an attitude of distaste, aversion, or intense hostility the roots of which may be found in matters unrelated to the actual qualities or attributes of American society or the foreign policies of the United States" from here [1]. I like it if we can make it Wiki acceptable.
As indicated, I've jumped into various Anti-x country articles and this may have been a bad idea; I think a lot of them don't belong. But, of course, editor A thinks "hey if you're country is prejudiced against, so is mine!" And you can't halt that—such is the Wiki nature. Anti-Americanism exists, even if I'm uncertain that other ethnic or national phobias should be given the same space. Given that people are going to look toward it as the grand-daddy page for other articles we should have a good definition. Marskell 00:30, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
OK. First I really hate topic sentences that say "this is controversial" or "this has no clear definition." Say it and mean it. That's what encyclopedias do. So, I removed the first sentence and just went ahead paraphrasing the quote. You're right the article does (to my glancing-around knowledge!) correspond to the literature. And this really is your work because of what you did with section two (I mean, this really is a good article if my opinion on that is not clear).
Regarding the intro, "distaste, aversion or intense hostility" really covers it even if you think a particular adjective is misplaced. I dropped "may be applied to Americans and non-Americans." A really obvious point. Marskell 00:55, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

I logged out before I could respond last night. You would like a qualifier and as I see it "whether the term is distinct or a collection of..." provides one. I don't believe lead sentences themselves should be qualifiers. Honestly, I've never understood that. "Dislike" and "hostility" are fair. See for instance [2]. The debate to my mind is not about the definition but about application and that's we have "use of the term." It doesn't seem right to make the intro redundant with the subsequent section. Marskell 12:19, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mumford

Thanks for cleaning that article up! I did it pretty quickly without checking over it really and then had to take a bit of a break. By the way, I'm excited about filling in some of the more unusual individuals and stories from the Civil War. I also did Champ Ferguson and Henry Hotze the other day. However, I would also really like to help with some of the important articles on the battles and regiments, etc. It's still a bit frustrating to me that we do not have articles for some significant battles and military units. As an experienced editor in this area, do you have any suggestions of where I can help the most? Tfine80 22:02, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

You're welcome. I should have held back for a while, but my editing mind starts to itch when I see typos and I rashly jumped in. Yes, I can see you have some obscure topics, some of which I hadn't heard of previously, so congratulations for ferreting them out. As for future topics, that's pretty easy. Go to [[Category:Battle_stubs]]. Alternatively, I have a to-do list in User:Hlj#To-do List and you are welcome to get ideas from that. Do me a favor, though. If you pick one, drop me a note at my regular email (see the top of User:Hlj) so we don't interfere with each other by accident. And check out my style guide, User:Hlj/CWediting. Have fun. [edit] Thanks for the kind comments you left on my talk page

(Please pardon any offenses against etiquette and proper formatting; I'm new here.)

You were surprised, but I can't imagine why Wikipedians busy with other work would take any notice of me. Certainly my few minor corrections to Wikipedia articles can't have attracted much attention. But then, I was rather stunned to find an article here about my Political Graveyard.

I don't really have a detailed critique of Wikipedia in terms of advantages and disadvantages. It seems to be successful at what it's about. The scope of Wikipedia as to political data is both broader and narrower than that of Political Graveyard, and it makes sense that this would be so.

I started the site in 1996, and I'm somewhat defensive about the fact that I am still using the same technology that I had at the outset. (My usual excuse is that I have 30,000 lines of code into this, and I certainly don't have the time to rewrite it all in some other language -- or more precisely, I'd rather spend that time developing more data.) The gigantic, towering disadvantage of my approach is that everything has to flow through me personally, and I'm not available to work on the project full time.

In building the site, I did want to try to exploit the possibilities of hypertext in a way that just wasn't happening much in the 1990s. I guess Wikipedia proves that a site doesn't have to be centrally controlled for this to work well. Kestenbaum 05:09, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Celso Daniel

Hi. Sorry for not replying your first message. Lastweek I sent an e-mail to Agência Estado which holds the rights of the photos that I attached to the Celso Daniel article. They replyed that I had to pay for them (and they are not cheap). Well, so I removed the last picture that remained at the article. There are still things being revealed about Celso Daniel case. This week, the magazine "Veja" (http://veja.abril.com.br/051005/p_064.html) issued an article about the judge João Carlos da Rocha Mattos, which was arrested for corruption almost two years ago. He accused the particular secretary of president Lula, Gilberto Carvalho, of being a key piece in the mistery that involves the death of Celso Daniel. But unfortunately things are not easy to be proved. As a dweller of Santo André and Worker's Party sympathizer it was very hard for me to deal with the death of our mayor. He had the gift of making everyone to believe in him. He made Santo André a more beautiful city, an example for the other cities in Brazil. I went to his burial and could see how helpless the people was. But the corruption in Santo Andre was already stinking, and his death brought us the evidence that something was deeply wrong in his administration. Massari 10:24, 3 October 2005 (Brasilia Time)

[edit] EU?

if I understand the comment on your userpage correctly, you are infuriated because America is not considered part of Europe and (a fortiori) of European culture? This doesn't have anything to do with the EU surely? Bosnia and Switzerland are considered part of Europe witout any doubt, without being in the EU. America is simply not part of Europe geographically, and even if major parts of American culture derive from European culture, it has ceased to be European for several centuries now; even more recent emigrants, like the Jews fleeing the Third Reich to the USA will by now be somewhere between "European emigrants in a foreign continent" and "USians with European roots". By "America" I mean "the Americas", btw; I find it much more infuriating to have "America" used as a synonym of "USA" all the time. While "un-American" is used as a near-synonym of "barbarian" in the US, you are aware, of course, that most Europeans are very glad to remain un-American if at all possible. Not that I disagree with your point about spelling, this is certainly not a point that should be belabo(u)red overmuch :) dab () 15:06, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

fair enough; I think your points about Europe go almost without saying for any attempt to tie "culture" to a landmass. There are no clear lines between Europe and Asia, and there are no clear lines between Europe and America, short of the Atlantic fault, nor are there clear lines between Europe and Northern Africa; but that doesn't mean that there cannot be meaningful differences. Superficially, Western Europe may look closer to the US than to Bulgaria. But then, the same holds for Japan. We can talk about cultural differences, focussing on either communalities, or on differences. The important thing is to keep chauvinism out of it, which really isn't a position at all, but what you call toddlers' behaviour in adults :) the "Transatlantic relations" may be strained at times, not because of objective differences, but due to overdoses of chauvinism, from either side, with relative quantities fluctuating over time. take care -- dab 09:30, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Curious if you would post your thoughts on the article. http://dallas.bizjournals.com/dallas/stories/2005/10/10/daily47.html Tfine80 01:20, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

Hah! I wonder if I could wrangle some free Southwest tickets out of this! Just kidding. I do think it's kind of bizarre that the Dallas Business Journal would be giving a play-by-play of the edits on Wikipedia, but I think it's even funnier that the guy adding the anti-Southwest POV was posting from an American Airlines IP address. All I can say is, I think my edits improved the article by reverting it to its previously NPOV state. (I also think the new additions to the Wright Amendment article on "Repeal Efforts" are a good start to talking about this issue.) —Cleared as filed. 00:43, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

Did you notice this guy's edits that were mentioned in the AP article? http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=67.166.193.202

I wonder if he was some sort of agent to discredit Wikipedia. Or maybe from Legend Airlines himself. Tfine80 03:07, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

I hadn't noticed that article until I got your message. Yeah, it is too bad that the article takes kind of a negative view towards Wikipedia, but on the other hand, we don't try to hide the fact that it's user-maintained and edited, and it does provide some amount of publicity for Wikipedia, which can only be good. And it makes it even more important to get the Wright Amendment article in good shape, since in a way, it has the same kind of visibility from this publicity that featured articles on the home page have. —Cleared as filed. 21:56, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] German cities

Hi! I think that all cities with "disambiguated" names (e.g. Rothenburg ob der Tauber) should at least have links or redirects from the "ambigu" name (e.g. Rothenburg), the rest is less important. But go ahead if you like. Notice that some cities get "X, Saxony", while others get "X (Saxony)". I don't know if there's a rule for that, but it looks a bit funny/amateuristic. BTW I think we should keep the old list (cities with population over 100.000, Großstadt) somewhere, that was informative too. Markussep 16:15, 23 October 2005 (UTC)

I just found this Category:Lists of cities in Germany. They're not nearly as complete as the German wikipedia list, but they do have population figures and districts. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to combine the lists Markussep 19:03, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Frédéric Passy

Good morning from Germany and thanks for a phantastic translation of the Dunant article. I just followed the link to the article about Frédéric Passy and found a weird amputation of much of the article which happened recently. To me, the edit on 23:44, 4 October 2005 by anonymous user 69.163.43.56 amounts to nothing short of vandalism so I decided to revert it. Could you please check this article and its history to see whether there was any reason (which I missed) for such a drastic shortening? --Uwe 07:49, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

Sorry, I just found out from the discussion page that the text is a verbatim copy from the Nobel committee's website, in other words a blatant copyright violation. So unfortunately, the amputation was justified. That leaves two issues: first, it would be necessary to inform an admin to delete the "contaminated" version from the history, and second, it would be nice to have the article rewritten (the bio on the Nobel Committees page is probably a good source of information for doing that). As you are much more familiar with the English Wikipedia, could you please take on both tasks? --Uwe 07:55, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Another translation is needed

Good morning from Germany to New York! Another translation is needed. These days, the Berlin Airlift is popularized in Germany due to some TV coverage. So I was surprised to find that there is no article about Gail Halvorsen in the English Wikipedia. That's kinda weird in my humble opinion. Hope you can find some time to do the translation. Sincerely Yours, --Uwe 08:13, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. I don't know the exact reason for the current popularity of this topic, except that there was a professionally-made TV movie consisting of two evening episodes running recently about the Luftbrücke, and that a couple of other stations jumped in with additional documentations. here is an interview with Gail Halvorsen in a Berlin newspaper, and here a transcript of a chat with him via CNN. A newspaper article, and another one here. That should help you to gather further information. Gail Halvorsen surely deserves no less than a featured article, but as a start a good translation will do. Have fun, --Uwe 22:51, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
And just in case you missed it: there is a new picture in the Marcel Junod article showing his monument in Hiroshima. I found it in the Commons. And I added some information to the article about the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Perhaps you can check my edits via the article history and put them into a better English? By the way, the picture of the Red Cross monument in Solferino which I added to the Red Cross article is mine, taken this year in early April. --Uwe 23:00, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

--ST 20:20, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

Vielleicht: In the German law literature such a case has'nt been discussed yet. There are also no relevant German court decisions. Because there is a very restrictive position regarding § 5 II UrhG pictures with that license had to be deleted. --172.181.192.10 19:50, 11 December 2005 (UTC) (Histo)

Better: In practice, however, this status has not been frequently applied in case law. Therefore, most pictures that fall under this licence should probably be deleted to be safe. Tfine80 20:08, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Das ist ein bisschen sehr zurückhaltend formuliert. Tatsache ist, dass es keinerlei Kommentarliteratur und keinerlei (nicht nur nicht-häufige) Rechtsprechung zu diesem Fall gibt. Histo --134.130.68.65 18:26, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mission not yet accomplished

Howdy again! I just skimmed through "our" Red Cross related articles and just realized that we forgot one of the five founders: Guillaume Henri Dufour. The article needs a serious rework because Dufour is not just one of the founders of the ICRC but an important person in Swiss history in general because he played an important role in a number of different fields. As always, you can use "my" German article to start from :o). Also, I added several aspects to the German Dunant article since you did your translation. Nothing especially important, but it would be nice to have both articles in line. Unfortunately I'm heavily involved with my job right now, preparing two papers for publication. As that means burning the midnight oil I lack the time to do extensive Wikipedia work at least for the next two to three weeks. But I will be available for any question or for any help I can give in the translation. Best Regards, --Uwe 20:14, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

Absolutely! Been in the back of my mind for a while... As you noticed, my contributions are mostly on impulse and rather random. But I will get to it! :) Good luck with your papers. Tfine80 00:24, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Gee. Please check the history of the recent edits in the article about the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. I had to revert several of them because they introduced significant amounts of wrong information. Also, please check the new articles Protocol III and Red Crystal flag and my comments on the respective discussion pages. They add little or no information which is cannot be found in the article about the International Movement, and both contain substantial chunks of copy&paste from that article. All in all, these articles and the recent changes to the article about the International Movement are snapshot reactions to the recent decision in Geneva (a decision which I loudly applaud). In my humble opinion, both of these articles are VfD candidates, Perhaps you can take care of that? Best Regards, --Uwe 21:46, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
Yes, before I left for the afternoon, I noticed all of this stuff, but I didn't have time to think about it. Yes, the Protocol III article is just a copy-and-paste, but if someone really expanded it with a complete and expanded history of the change, might it not be worth a separate article (which might happen because it is on the front page)? I agree the symbol itself probably should be a redirect or VfD because of the section that exists about the the symbols. But, why don't we just wait until it is removed from the front page before deciding what to do? Tfine80 00:58, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
Actually the best solution would probably be for me to translate your great Geneva Conventions article! PS, you should look at what some people are suggesting here: [3] -- I would also love to have a conversation with you on irc at some point about the question of article structure and length; I think I agree with you more than you agree with yourself!Tfine80 01:00, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
I find it strange that three of four people who objected did it primarily or solely due to the size of the article. I mean, even in the English Wikipedia there are articles, articles containing readable text and not just lists, that are double the size of this article, for example Race or 2003 Invasion of Iraq or Joseph Chamberlain or Hugo Chávez or George W. Bush and many more. It's not easy to find them on the list of long pages because the vast majority there are simple lists. But to me, the Red Cross article is average in size, 64 KB translates to about 20 or so pages of printed text in a book. Some of the volumes on my bookshelf which I used as source and reference for that article have 600 to 700 pages, so the article actually is a condensed synopsis of the overall topic. If you check the same page in the German Wikipedia, you will even find that the second-longest article is a real article and not a list (by the way, having de:Geschichte Polens on #2 and de:Polen on #11 is kinda funny). I strongly object to splitting the article, but if a consensus is found to do so I accept that decision. Meeting on IRC sounds like a good idea. Hopefully, my work-related stress is over next week so I will have more time in the evenings so we can arrange something. Late evening for me is probably the best time due to our different time zones. Best Regards, --Uwe 09:45, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
It's also interesting to note that there is no size limit or even a specific recommendation in the German Wikipedia. Check this page de:Wikipedia:Wie_schreibe_ich_gute_Artikel#Länge_eines_Artikels which only recommends that the length of an article should be appropriate depending on the topic of the article. A limit of 40k was proposed a while ago but that proposal was rejected. And the German version of the Red Cross article passed a second FAC because somebody thought that it did not deserve FA status due to excessive size. But like the first time the second FAC went well and gave a clear result in favour of the article. Interesting differences between the en-WP and the de-WP. --Uwe 11:25, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
My issue also has to do with the philosophy of Wikipedia. I think of each article as a node that should be self-contained. The articles should fully explain the topic, and if a single point needs to be expanded or becomes too long, it can moved to another "node" but a summary needs to remain in the original article. The English Wikipedia philosophy has created disasters like in History of the United States where the article has been split up into date ranges and nobody edits it because it is so spread out and inconsistent in tone and depth. The German Wikipedia is more like Britannica or Brockhaus I believe where it is completely normal to find very long articles if that is necessary to fully cover the topic. I appreciate the dynamics of hypertext, but believe that it has gotten out of control here. For the FA's this also becomes a problem because the core topics which Wikipedia needs to become established in are neglected. Many of FA's are peoples' pet interests like the Hero of Belarus, etc. Tfine80 14:35, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
This is simply strange. The history of the article Red Crystal flag contains well over 50 edits now, and there still isn't any significant part of information which was not copied from the article about the Red Cross Movement. What a terrible waste of time. Sufficient to say that I completely share your philosophy that each article should be self-contained. For example, if I print an article to read it offline later, chances are that I don't have web access to click on a link while reading it. The History of the United States is a real mess, and the fact that Hero of Belarus passed FAC while the Red Cross article will probably not due to some size restrictions speaks volumes about the idea that some people have about quality. My wiki stress is at level yellow right now but that's no reason to worry. By the way, I appreciate your idea about translating the German article about the Geneva Conventions. I hope that starting with mid of next week I will be able again to spend more time with Wikipedia. --Uwe 21:24, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
What can I say? Wasted time is Wikipedia's speciality. :) I think the controversies of the last several weeks mean that there may be big changes in the English Wikipedia coming soon. I hope that there will be a bit more leadership in what subjects require focus and reworking. And as I have kept listed on my user page, the German Wikipedia, while not perfect, should be a model. [edit] WP:FAC

Apologies - I should have let you know that I was going to nominate International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement at WP:FAC. In retrospect, perhaps I should have gone to WP:PR first, and waited a little time after the Third Symbol decision, but it is such a great page I could not hold myself back :) I suspect that splitting it up is going to be the only way for it to become featured, though. -- ALoan (Talk) 10:16, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New book

To lighten up your mood, check this book which was recently published this year. Seems to be the most up-to-date general volume on the history and activities of the ICRC. I just ordered a copy through Amazon though it will take 10-14 days to arrive here. Hopefully, it will make a good reading between Christmas and New Years Eve. The excerpt looks like the book is well researched, and if you check the References section in the article you will see that the author has published on the subject before (the last item in the "Journal articles" list). --Uwe 22:05, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Interesting... If it's Cambridge University Press, I might be able to get it at the New York Public Library or Columbia University. Tfine80 22:09, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
I received my copy of the book today from Amazon. From skimming through the pages and reading here and there it seems to be a very worthwhile source of information. David P. Forsythe seems to have some very close contacts to people within the ICRC while keeping a critical look as an outside observer of the organization. All in all, to some extent the book looks like sort of an unofficial third volume to the "History of the International Committee of the Red Cross" books (volume I: 1859 to 1914 and volume II: 1914 to 1945) which are mentioned in the reference section of the Red Cross article (though he goes into the early history of the movement as well). Another interesting aspect is that he puts the focus of the book on policy making and field work of the ICRC as opposed to an all-history focus. Definitively recommended. On the "not so good news" front, one of our lab assistants is on sick leave due to a serious (and painful) inflammation of the renal pelvis. Which leaves plenty of additional lab work for me, experiments of the "can't wait" or "must be done in time" style which, in turn, again means to burn the midnight oil. Yesterday I was home at around 10PM, today only slightly earlier. Sorry for having to postpone our chat session once again but I'm positively sure we will make it. The Norwegian version of the Dunant article failed to reach FA status because six positive votes are required for that but it only achieved 4 in favour and zero against. So it's "only" a "Good article" for now. Which is the equivalent of "Lesenswerter Artikel" in the German Wikipedia. I have written a couple of such articles, too - interestingly enough two about US American topics :o). Check my de-WP user page if you're curious. Best Regards, --Uwe 20:01, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

I took the liberty of putting your comment onto the Subway talk page and I responded to it there. Brjaga 05:31, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Orioane's RfA

Hey Tfine80/ARCHIV2! Thank you very much for your support on my RfA. To my amazement there were no negative or neutral votes and the result was (28/0/0). I am now an administrator so I'll try and do my best in this new position. I'll be happy to answer any comments or requests from you. Thanks one more time, Mihai -talk 20:27, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Café Prückel

Hi, I just had a look at that guy Kris Unger's other contributions, but so far he only edited on December 1, 2005. Needless to say I don't know him although actually I was at the Café Prückel only this afternoon, but only for half an hour or so.

Although what he writes is basically true there is of course no way that text could be used in an encyclopaedia. Someone will have to rewrite it from scratch I'm afraid. He even uploaded an image (Image:2332091-O.jpg) but it is not linked to the corresponding article.

By the way, just a few minutes ago I added a reference section to Viennese café and also de:Wiener Kaffeehaus. The book I'm referring to only just came out, has a short historical introduction and then a description of all the cafés worth visiting. And lots of pictures.

All the best, <KF> 21:18, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Chat

Good evening, sorry for not finding some time to chat via IRC. I got an e-mail from a very good friend on tuesday whom I had not met for more than a year. As she is on holiday this week we took the opportunity on wednesday to go out for a nice evening. Which meant that I slept out of town, got to work late in the morning today and had to spend some extra hours in the evening as compensation. Tomorrow directly after finishing my work I will go on a prolonged Wikipedia weekend tour - one meeting with other Wikipedians in Hamburg on friday and one in Berlin on Sunday. Hopefully, we can chat next week. Sincerely Yours, --Uwe 23:17, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Danish translation of the Henry Dunant article

Guessing from my non-existent knowledge of the Danish language, the recent comment in the history of the Danish article about Dunant - 15. dec 2005 kl. 22:25 Brams Resten af artiklen oversat, skabelon Template:Oversæt fjernet. Hvad er Template:Link UA - levn fra norsk - det er rødt og sært placeret?) - looks like the translation from the Norwegian version is complete. Interesting chain of translations: DE -> EN -> NO -> DA. In the Swedish Wikipedia it looks like they did not start the translation until now.

By the way, I also responded to your latest message on my talk page. --Uwe 09:00, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Transit strike

If you look more carefully at the edit history, I was not the one who removed the item– in my edit I just put up the picture. In fact I agree with you, and I've restored the item.--Pharos 23:00, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Che

Yes, I suppose that'd be great. However, it's better off being summarized by someone who's good at memorizing somewhat-long passages. That's what I love about wikis; you only have to do what you can do best. —MESSEDROCKER (talk) 22:37, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Bronx Science

i don't work for the bus company, or for bronx science. write to bronx science if you feel the need to. this is valid and important information and thus should be included. 24.239.149.9 19:00, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Translation

Howdy from Germany, I hope you had some nice Christmas holidays. If you're bored for some reason, it would be nice if you could take a proofreading look at a small translation of mine: Impuzamugambi. Inspired by the Hotel Rwanda DVD I got as a Christmas present. --Uwe 22:48, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Had a fine Christmas once the strike ended. Nice job. I should see that movie. Wikipedia is so weak on Africa; it's pathetic. Tfine80 23:07, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

thanks for the note. i'm basically reverting the edits of what appears to be a georgetown university booster. --24.12.175.201 04:53, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Khvylovy

Khvylovy is more common in Google indeed. I renamed just because 1) on Vsesvit site he is Khvylovy 2) it's seems to me closer to original Ilya K 19:00, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Edits Anti-Americanism

  • The point about criticism is duplicative.->Will try to reword to reflect what i ment.
  • The issue about monarchy is a historical one.->K that is true, but still, I think at any given time there were strong bounds between the USA and at least one monarchy.
  • The Iran and North Korea point is worded in a conditional way.->That was not why i removed it, I removed it because that point was already stated earlier in the same paragraph (the use of anti-American ideologies may represent a way for nations to unify the country and bridge political divisions and/or to cover up evident flaws in its political or economic system.) in a much better and clearer way and without explicitly naming those two countries.
  • The "unequal education system" is a POV term and doesn't have much foreign resonance. -> I didn't say it was good or bad, i just stated a fact, that it is unequal. Proponents of this kind of educational system say it's good because it encourages competition and thus quality while opponents say it puts poor people at an educational disadvantadge. However, i didn't draw either of these conclusions. Remember, NPOV doesn't mean we can't state facts.
  • I agree the "successful" capitalist country issue doesn't make much sense.--62.251.90.73 23:53, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
I think your rewording of the education point is perfectly fine aswell, just wanted to make clear that mine wasn't POV either but since we both agree on your rewording it's not worth any further discussion.
The statement about criticism and use as a perjorative doesn't need to be mentioned in the introduction. It is already expanded upon in the next section.-> I think it does since I think the term is used just as often used perjoratively as not (just like most -ism's by the way) and thus should be made clear in the introduction.--62.251.90.73 00:06, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] St. John's University article

Yeah, I saw that. I didn't want to leave a longer note on the talk page. It's frustrating, but I would think if there is more you might get an Admin to intervine. I'll check back in again as well. Cheers.--Bookandcoffee 01:34, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

what compromises would you like to make? since this is really going to be a back and forth thing. Bobbydoop 04:09, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Please do not keep undoing other people's edits without discussing them first. This is considered impolite and unproductive. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia under the three-revert rule, which states that nobody may revert an article to a previous version more than three times in 24 hours. (Note: this also means editing the page to reinsert an old edit. If the effect of your actions is to revert back, it qualifies as a revert.) Thank you. --NaconKantari 04:11, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

I haven't touched Bergtrum since creating it. Alpha Phi Alpha i have good amount of proof. Allow me a section on St. John's and Stuyvesant where I can place VERIFIED information. If it's not verified, you can remove it. Fair enough? Bobbydoop 04:22, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
