Controversial country name: The name Burma and Myanmar is very confusing to many people around the world including the people living inside that country. The name " Myanmar " has been in the literature of Burmese language long long ago but the name " Burma " was given by the Imperial British when they rule that nation, occupied and rule. After the Independence from the British in 1948, and the nation become newly Independent country, the country keep on using the good foundation the British had laid and democratic process has been continued. Democratic Government was elected by the people and " Burma " take stand as one of the jewel nation of Asia. This last for only 14 years when the Burmese strongman General Ne Win revoke the democratic Government jailing many prominent politicians and he himself rule the nation with dictatorship system as Revolutionary Council. He imposed his will and create "Burmese way to socialism" and seriously abuse the military institution as "his" personal army guarding him and his associates. He rule "Burma" for 26 years in many shape or form and finally the people cannot take it anymore and revolt against him and his regime in 1988 creating the largest blood bath in the modern history of Burma. When Ne Win the dictator of Burma step down, there emerge another military General by the name of Saw Maung and killed many demonstrators, oppositions, students etc and rule with marshal law and create SLORC State Law and Order Restoration Council thus the changing of the country's name was done in 1989. The name was " Myanmar " an "authentic" Burmese name pick by an "illegal" regime that was not elected nor supported by the people at that time. The UN itself accepted that new name for in this imperfect world there are many regimes that rules many nations without the approval or support of the appropriate people so in reality the country name " Burma " was one sidedly (by the military regime) changed from " Burma " to " Myanmar ". As for me I had no problem with the name for it does represent the people in any name but the way that was implemented is disputable. Both names represent the people of Burma or Myanmar. What should have happened or done is changing of anything including the name should be voted and endorsed by legal terms in legal ways, legal laws. SLORC changed its name to SPDC State Peace and Development Council continue ruling the country in disregard to world's request to heed the people's wish of democratic reform.
