Tewaaraton Trophy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tewaaraton Trophy is an award given to the top American college lacrosse player, since 2001. It is the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy in football. This pre-eminent lacrosse award is presented by the "University Club of D.C." There are awards given to the top male lacrosse and female lacrosse players.

Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports played in North America. The Tewaaraton Foundation honors the Native American heritage of lacrosse in the name of its trophy: "Tewaaraton," the Mohawk name for their game and the progenitor of present day lacrosse. The Tewaaraton Trophy has received the endorsement of the Mohawk Nation Council of Elders.
