[edit] Welcome!

I noticed you working on Middle-earth articles. Great! Welcome! We always need more great editors. If you're looking for something to do, you might start by taking a look at Category:Tolkien stubs and see if there are articles you can expand and/or merge with existing articles. (Sometimes just a redirect is enough. They're starting to be about awfully minor topics.)

Probably the most helpful article for learning how to edit Tolkien articles is Middle-earth canon, which outlines the policy we try to use. This is, as far as I know, one of the only places to seriously attempt to incorporate corrections from History of Middle-earth into information from the Silmarillion, etc. My general rule of thumb is to do the best you can to be accurate, and be sure to read the relevant articles when you edit because there's a good chance that if there is a discrepancy, someone else has already noted it. However, none of us can possibly keep track of everything at the same time, so do the best you can, and be ready to document your sources.

You will get an idea of conventions as you go. There aren't a lot of absolute rules, but there are some things that we try to do consistently to make it easier for readers (and editors). One helpful thing is to use List of Middle-earth articles to keep track of edits to Middle-earth articles and talk pages. (Use the "related changes" link on that page.) Also, if you're not sure what to do (or why someone who seems to know what they are doing did something that seems odd to you), please ask questions! Again, welcome!

-Aranel ("Sarah") 22:01, 14 August 2005 (UTC) (By the way, you only need to post about a change on a talk page if it's a major or possibly controversial change. Typo fixes are usually not debated. ;)

[edit] Page name for temperature articles

To avoid flip-flopping between 'degree Fahrenheit' and 'Fahrenheit' or 'degree Celsius' and 'Celsius', I propose that we have a discussion on which we want. [edit] Disambiguation link repair

Sorry, but I am not understanding the problem. Which link needs dismbiuation link repair? In general, one chooses the link most representing the word you mean. For example, "industry" has several choices, but in this case (in your Urban planning section) it points to the correct usage. If it did not, you would pick a better choice out of the uses offered on the Disambiguation page.

Does that help?

[edit] G4

Yeah, G4 is actually a very narrow, and very misunderstood criterion. It only applies to recreations where there had been AfD consensus. Recreation after prod is treated as a deprod, and recreation after CSD needs to meet other CSD criteria to be re-deleted. They had tagged it for A7 and G4. G4 was inapplicable and A7 I declined. Thanks. - CrazyRussian talk/email 02:06, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hi!

Thanks for your comment on AfD earlier, you meantioned that the ACIM on the whole is notable. I tried to establish that for myself recently, but was unable to do so. When I asked about the importance of the book in the discussion areas, I was basically ignored and harrassed. I dug into the citations and found them to be not only contradictory but that they had been obfuscated to various degrees. So this is a serious question that I am wondering about. Looking into the book itself revealed either anonymous web-sites ore a few churches in Texas. It is my understanding that any article should establish and make plain for itself in the content just what establishes notability among other concerns. I realize that such isn't always possible, however, until a few days ago, I hadn't ever heard of ACIM. Does this make sense? Let me know. Thanks!  :) Ste4k 07:42, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Convent of Hell

No hard feelings about the edit. Your version is more or less what I would have written if I'd been starting from scratch, but I wrote the original version years ago and still had it lying around. Finding it on my hard drive was what inspired me to create the article in the first place. Klope680 01:30, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Unsinkable Molly Brown 2006

The way the article was padded written (more than half of it lists of people involved) seemed to me that it focused more on the people behind the production, rather than the production (plot and other details, etc). Thus befitting A7. Kimchi.sg 15:16, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fact and Theory in evolution

This is a very good observation Tevildo. In fact, a few hours back I also came to the same realization as you can see here. I have to accept part of the blame because I emphasized that "fact" has two meanings that are being confused, and "theory" has two meanings that are being confused, but I did not emphasize that "evolution" also has two meanings that are being confused. So the statement that "evolution is a fact and a theory" can be parsed and interpreted several different ways, and it is sort of a fun phrase. However, to someone who is not aware of these multiple layers of meaning, it just sounds like nonsense. And of course, it is treated like nonsense by the detractors. And evolution scientists avoid exlaining this carefully at their peril.--Filll 03:17, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] ID

Hi Tevildo. The prior discussion of Ann Coulter is mostly here. As she's mentioned a number of times, maybe the easiest way to seek relevant passages is to use the "find" function and type in "Coulter", which will bring up a number of threads in this archive. I believe I had brought up the issue, and arguments ensued here and there, then finally settled on the premise that she's really a commentator and not a leading or original or primary proponent (or something like that). ... [edit] ID again

Tevildo, I definitely noticed your comment placed near the bottom of the section at Talk:Intelligent design#Ambiguous_sentences. I'd like a week or two, as my time permits, to research and consider the implications of what you said. As I've mentioned on talk page(s) related to ID, this is a problem, or set of problems, that are related to the demarcation problem that rears its ugly head every time somebody or some group thinks it/he/she/they have a bright idea that is SCIENCE. Which of course capitalizes, whether justly or unjustly, on the hard work of hundreds of thousands, maybe more, of highly educated individuals who actually do the hard work of finding out what the rest of us can depend on, and what are the probabilities we can count on, etc. There are one or more ways of saying it briefly and accurately in the context of that part of the article on ID, I'm convinced. But it'll require a bit more research on recent reliable summaries of scientific method and philosophy of science. On the other hand, maybe I'm wrong about that. ;-) I'll drop you a note later on. ... Kenosis 02:24, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

RE your response: While the preferred technical usage is "scientific method", the popular usage remains "the scientific method". That's all I was saying on the ID talk page. It seems it's a maintenance headache that likely is not worth keeping up with, on the whole, because frequently folks come along, see the term "scientific method" without the "the" attached, and plop it right in there, repeatedly. So unless the regular particpants agree to maintain it, as has been done at scientific method, the popular usage will prevail. But my note above had more to do with settling the issue of the words "empirical science" by finding sourcing for the words, or a suitable alternative. ... Kenosis 15:20, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi! It's been a while since the article pupilometer was written. The original user that was the author no longer exists. [edit] Ye Art Cordially Invited to the Annex

Hello, My good Fellow, listen and I shalt telleth Ye a Tale of a Wiki that well comes All Manner of Articles relating to Fiction. What is This wonderful Place of Fantasy, You ask? It is the Annex, Haven to All fiction-related Refugee Articles from Wikipedia.

Before nominating or proposing a fiction-related Article for Deletion, It is My sincerest Hope that Ye import It to the Annex. Why do This, You wonder? Individuals have dedicated an enormous Amount of Time to writing These Articles, and ’twould be a Pity for the Information to Vanish unto the Oblivion where only Administrators could see Them.

Here is a Step-by-Step Process of how to Bringeth Articles into the Annex:

  1. Ye shall need at least three Browser Tabs or Windows open. For the first Tab or Window, go to Special:Export. For the second, go here. (If Ye have not an Account at Wikia, then create One.) Do whatever Ye want for the third.
  2. Next, open the Program known as Notepad. If Ye haveth It not, then open WordPad. Go to “Save as,” and for “Encoding,” select either “Unicode” or “UTF-8.” For “Save as type,” select “All Files.” For “File name,” input “export.xml” and save It. Leave the Window open.
  3. Next, go to the Special:Export Window at Wikipedia, and un-check the two small Boxes near the “Export” Button. Input the Name of the Wikipedia Article which Ye wish to import to the Annex into the large Field, and click “Export.”
  4. Right-click on the Page full of Code which appears, and clicketh on “View Source” or “View Page Source” or any Option with similar Wording. A new Notepad Window called “index[1]” or Something similar should appear. Press Ctrl+A to highlight All the Text then Ctrl+C to copy It. Close yon “index[1]” Window, and go to the Notepad “export.xml” Window. Press Ctrl+V to pasteth the Text There, and then save It by pressing Ctrl+S.
  5. Now go to the Special:Import Window over at the Annex. Clicketh on “Browse…” and select the “export.xml” File. At last, click on “Upload file,” and Thou art done, My Friend! However, if It says 100 Revisions be imported, Ye be not quite finished just yet. Go back to Wikipedia’s Special:Export, and leave only the “Include only the current revision, not the full history” Box checked. Export That, copy the Page Source, close the “index[1]” Window, and go to the “export.xml” Window. Press Ctrl+A to highlight the Code all ready There, press “backspace” to erase It, and press Ctrl+V to pasteth the new Code There. Press Ctrl+S to save It, then upload once more to the Annex. Paste {{Wikipedia|{{PAGENAME}}}} at the Bottom of the imported Article at the Annex, and Ye art now finally done! Keepeth the “export.xml” File for future Use.

Thank Ye for using the Annex, My Friend — the Annex Hath Spoken 01:41, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Luxxury

Hello! I hope I'm asking in the right place. Thanks for your comments about the [Luxxury] article, I tried to address them at the AFD page] as I feel as though the entry (especially with the additional press I added/pointed to) more than meets the requirements of the Notability criteria (especially since that section suggests that meeting *one* criteria is sufficient, and the band meets several as noted in the AdD page). Interesting you mentioned, at the AfD, the issue of tetanus. My favorite part of the article was that in which cancer can be "cured" by never biopsying anything that looks like it might be malignant.
