[edit] Patent nonsense
I'm not sure if linking to Wikipedia:Patent nonsense is the best choice here since that page expressly describes a bunch of things as not being patent nonsense, but some of which probably deserve a warning like this (without necessarily escalating to test3). DopefishJustin (・∀・) 21:02, May 20, 2005 (UTC)
- I also agree that the patent nonsense link is not the best choice for this message—it means that for most vandals the warnings should progress straight from the relatively tame {{test}} to the pretty stern {{test3}}. I think that having something in between these two warnings is good, but most vandalism doesn't fall into the category of patent nonsense as described by Wikipedia:Patent nonsense. [edit] Using these templates to track vandals
It would be very useful if the addition of {{test}}, etc. were automatically to put the User in a category of "Vandals to be tracked", so as to generate a list of these people. What happens often enough is that the warnings are ineffectual.
I tried doing this, on the model of {{stub}}, but it doesn't seem to work, maybe because these are User Talk pages that {{test}} is applied to. Is this worth pursuing?
I'm posting this here as well to get maximum visibility, but please centralize responses to the Test Template Talk page.Bill 13:20, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Header
I added the header Test warn 2 to make the test distinguishable from other text on the discussion page, as well as a count for easy reference of the last {{test}} used. ∞Who?¿? 04:20, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
- It makes it look like the header is part of the article, causing what just happened, me to click "edit" and end up editing the whole template. I don't think this is useful. Maybe if it included a subst. --Golbez 05:46, July 29, 2005 (UTC)
-
- I'm trying a hard line and bold text for seperation. Example:
Test warn 2
∞Who?¿? 05:56, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
Changed the numbering to "type of warning". See talk on Test4 talk. ∞Who?¿? 19:04, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
I would prefer not to have a header built into this template so that I have the option of adding one myself. I often use it with a header naming the page that was changed, so that it's not just standing out there without context on a shared ip page. FreplySpang (talk) 19:07, July 29, 2005 (UTC)
FreplySpang's example:
[edit] Your changes to Foo
Please stop adding nonsense to Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. If you want to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you.
- Good example. I originally had sub-headings, but found out very quickly that if you click the header edit, you are editing the template and not the user talk page, which has happened. I would say that we propose that addition to the template, but they are all used and not subst, so there will be a lot of {{{1}}} all over the place. I think that it would be a good addition however. The main thing is the seperation, about 50% of the time, I add test and have to go back and edit it becuase it blends in with all the other text. Most anon's do not have enough discussion to have headers, so all the notes blend together. I personally make it a habit to add headers to my normal discussion, but a {{test}} tag is usually done in a hurry. ∞Who?¿? 19:30, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
-
- Oops, sorry. The example didn't really show the point I was trying to make. I'd rather just have the template text be "Please stop adding.... Thank you." so that I can decide which heading level works best on the talk page. I do think it's a problem that the test templates tend to get lost on anon talk pages. There's enough variation, though, that I think the person posting the test message has to take the extra moment to decide what kind of heading, horizontal line, etc. is needed. FreplySpang (talk) 21:01, July 29, 2005 (UTC)
-
-
- No, I appologize, your example made sense, I just didn't say it the way I meant. I understand that it would interfere with adding a custom header, but thought maybe someone could have a userfied version of the template for that purpose. I know mine could have been userfied, but since they aren't subst, with the hr, you could goto a page that currently has them and easily see the different test messages used. It's ok though, it seems there is a dislike to the hr in general, so if it's removed thats fine. I left more notes on Template talk:Test3 on this. Thanks for your input. ∞Who?¿? 21:19, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Headers revisted
This is a continuation of my previous proposal. Some users liked the hard line and/or sub-header, others didn't. There was also the bold headings. I feel I explained the reasons for adding these clearly, however some users use their own version of these templates and complained that adding a header would only mess it up. The main problem is the majority of users do not add a header or line, and do not use subst. The following is an example of what a lot of these anon talk pages look like:

[edit] End Example 1
This is riducously messy and can easily be solved with a variety of proposed additions to the templates:
- Option 1: Add the hr or wiki equivalent ---- to the top of the template. This will not create the easy section-editing link, however, {{test}} can still be used with or w/o subst. And still clearly divides the entries.
- Option 2: Use sub-headings, with subst so that it doesn't create an Edit link that edits the template. If used w/o subst, and the edit link is used, it will edit the template. Ex: ==Warning==
-
- Note with this option, the headings will have to have names everyone can agree on, I gave an example list on Test4. Also everyone would have to use {{subst:test}}.
- Option 3: Use the hr with a bold heading. Same results as example 2, but with heading, see Example 4
- Feel free to add more options.

Yes, this is rather long, but it seemed no one bothered to look at how messy the use of these templates are. Not everyone adds a header when they use the template, and it would be much easier to ask the few who do add their own headers not too, opposed to getting the majority, including the ones who will never read the instructions on the discussion page to use subst. I invite everyone to go thru these "What links here" Test2, Test3, Test4, Test5, and see how many of them look cluttered. Please take the time to view all of the proposal and comment. Thank you. ∞Who?¿? 08:22, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Hostile?
Am I the only one who feels like this comes across as terribly hostile to newcomers? It might say "please" and "thank you", but it uses them in a nasty commanding fashion, like when someone tells you to "Please shut up. Thank you". I don't see the need to threaten these people, who for the most part seem to be brand new to Wikipedia and perhaps not surprisingly haven't got around to discovering the sandbox yet. Greeting people with this message doesn't seem to be establishing a terribly welcome environment, in my impression. Sarge Baldy 00:48, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] "refrain" vs "stop"
At this time, the modified template says "...please refrain from adding nonsense..." I get the impression from doing a lot of RC patrol that many casual vandals are quite young, and I wonder if they understand the word "refrain." How about "please don't add nonsense..."? Joyous (talk) 02:47, August 14, 2005 (UTC)
- I'd much prefer this to stop, anyway. The "thank you" was also added back in, which I still read as being aggressive (especially in combination with the word "stop"). Sarge Baldy 10:01, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Auto signatures
try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Adam1213/tsandbox I have found a way of adding auto signatures!!!! Please add this to all the templates
You add to the article ```` (with shift like a signature)
You put info for future edits and follow below —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Adam1213 (talk • contribs) 04:32, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
- To clarify, what Adam1213 wants to add is ~~~~ to the template, to allow it to auto sign when added. Add {{User:Adam1213/tsandbox}} in your sandbox to see the example. ∞Who?¿? 04:53, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- Unfortunately, as I explained on Adam's talk page, it's just not feasible to have auto-signatures on templates. The main problem is that it requires a change in the way users add the templates. Editors are used to signing their comments with ~~~~; making the templates non-standard would be quite confusing. Also, the test templates are already transcluded on thousands of pages and a change such as auto-signature would break them. Not a bad idea in principle, but I just don't see it working out. Carbonite | Talk 04:58, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
- I tend to agree. I personally already have them in my Monobook.js, not that I couldnt change that, but several users have the same. I just thought I would clarify what Adam1213 was trying to say, its better for them to propose it here, rather than changing the template itself. Good attempt to improve it though, but as you said, a little hard to implement so late in the game. ∞Who?¿? 05:30, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Alteration
It seems to me that the use of this template on shared IPs can lead to confusion. For this reason, I was thinking that rather than saying this:
Please stop adding nonsense to Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you.
The text should perhaps say:
Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you.
In this way, it holds true for both the first and second vandalism, as well as any other, while still indicating to someone familiar with the templates that this is not the first time.
Additionally, the {{test3}} template could also be changed to say:
Please do not vandalize Wikipedia, if you continue to vandalize pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia.
In the case of shared IPs I think it best to avoid using {{test4}}, without making sure to remove the template once it is no longer blocked.
Any thoughts on this matter would be appreciated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.250.61.132 (talk • contribs)
I agree, for a different reason. "Stop" is much too aggressive-sounding for this to only be 1 step above {{test}}, and {{test3}} already starts with "please stop" so there's too much repetition between the two. "Do not" sounds much better for test2, like this:
Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you.

[edit] Shared IPs / not biting newbies
For shared IPs, I think it might be a good idea to have an explanatory message to ensure that others using the IP don't get bitten. This could be an additional template to add at the top of the user talk page. It might be called {{anon-welcome}}. Here's a draft:
This is the talk page for the IP address Test2 |
|
|
The idea is that this is an extra template to add the top of a user talk page when adding the usual messages, ensuring that users sharing the IP with a vandal don't feel the messages are necessarily addressed to them. For the same reason, it might be preferable to change the messages to address "this IP address" rather than "you". Thoughts? Rd232 21:20, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
- Hey, that's pretty spiffy. I like it. Thanks! FreplySpang (talk) 22:27, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
- I won't deny it looks spiffy, but I don't think we need this. Shared IPs should already be tagged with {{sharedip}}, and then there's the message at the bottom of the talk page saying multiple people could be using it. There's a limit to how much people are going to read, and to newbies the mediawiki interace is cluttered up enough as it is. I'm not sure adding another nested-tabled piece of text is going to help. --fvw* 23:55, 16 October 2005 (UTC)
- SharedIP addresses itself initially to admins and is somewhat technical. The only help it offers to users is a suggestion/link to create an account. And it assumes that we know that the IP is shared, which we don't necessarily - we should be able to merely allow for the possibility eg a static IP used by several people, or which changes hands. The message at the bottom of all IP talk pages is at the bottom, long after users may have been put off by vandal-related messages addressed to someone else. It is at least friendlier than SharedIP, but still offering only the one piece of help (suggestion/link to acreate an account). Rd232 12:41, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
- The draft could be amended in any number of ways, either to remove tables (some people don't like this, though in this context many of the usual objections don't really apply) or to revise text, but the aim is to (a) be more welcoming and helpful and (b) to do this at the top of the page, above vandal-related messages. I don't see the point about cluttering up the interface; it's only on one page - it's content. And it's designed to be skimmable. Rd232 12:41, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Changes to Test2

[edit] Changes?
Ok, the way the template is worded now isn't nice. We already have {{test2a}} (and the whole {{blank2}} series too, to boot) to deal with page blankers, so why did we have to introduce that to this template? It makes it sounds bloated. Can someone point me to where that was decided? I'm thinking of changing it back. Titoxd(?!? - help us) 00:22, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

- Well it just got changed again. I don't like it personally; test2a or the blank templates already exist, so why change the wording for this one? Besides, adding nonsense and removing content are different things.--Shanel 01:55, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

As a nod to civility, let's add a "please" to this text, as in, "If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox." SchuminWeb (Talk) 09:23, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Quote myself from Template talk:Test2a: "I'm all for politeness, but two please and one thank you is a bit much isn't it?" - By the way, since this involves several templates, how about starting a centralized discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject user warnings? [edit] Adding an image
I noticed one person added an image to their own version of test2. I think I like it. I'll show the two versions:
Normally:
Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia; it is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you.
vs.
Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia; it is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. Thank you.
So I propose we add it, to here and test3. What do y'all think? -Patstuart 02:48, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- No, a too liberal use of warning images would reduce the impact of those like where it really gets serious. Femto 15:24, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Agree with Femto, not really necessary at this level of warning. Besides, if we want to get their attention, that's what the bright orange box is for (-: JYolkowski // talk 22:17, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Could someone add {{TestTemplatesNotice}} to the template (within the <noinclude> tag)? I'd do it myself, but it is protected. EVula 18:10, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wording
With lots of time spent on RC patrol, I've always felt that the wording for test2|Article is a little odd. Saying "as you did to page" feels odd. I believe it might be more clear as "as you did to the page page" or something similar (maybe article as opposed to page). akuyumeTC 02:36, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
I agree.
All that's needed is a quick tweaking of the #if clause on line 1, from:
Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia{{#if:{{{1|}}}|, as you did to [[:{{{1}}}]]}}.
to:
Please do not add nonsense to Wikipedia{{#if:{{{1|}}}|, as you did to the [[:{{{1}}}]] page}}.
