[edit] Notability of Erica Keel

A tag has been placed on Erica Keel, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Realkyhick 06:09, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

The issue here isn't the order in which you created the article and the accompanying summary pn the main "Violence" page. It has to do with the fact that, generally speaking, homicides involving a single person are not notable by Wikipedia standards. Sadly, people are murdered in America every day, and largely because of that sad statistic, articles about individual murder victims will usually not pass muster here. The usual exceptions to this are: 1) The victim was notable before being killed, and/or 2) The murder was of such a nature that it attracted considerably more attention than most, due to its nature, the person charged with the crime, or other factors when tend to attract coverage from the press.
While Keel's status as transgender does make her a little different than most victims, it still likely isn't enough to merit an article solely about her, unless this crime is getting a lot of publicity in the local area. That is also likely for several others in this category who have articles about them right now. The approach of a summary about each victim in the main article is likely the best. I notice that not all of the victims listed have articles right now. It may be that some of those that do may face deletion of their articles. You might want to expand the summary items in the main article about those.
There's no hard and fast rule about articles for individual murder victims. Each is handled on a case-by-case basis. But the "rules of thumb" I laid out above generally apply, and the current trend is definitely against most of these articles.
Moreover, the link to the online petition might be seen as promoting a particular point of view, and therefore violating Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. Remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not to be used to promote anything, be it a cause, a career or a business. When dealing with socially-charged issues such as LGBT issues, take great care not to insert a point of view in your writing or editing. Realkyhick 06:47, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Update: After looking over the Violence against LGBT people article and individuals who have individual articles linked to them (as did Erica Keel), it appears to me that the subjects all of those articles have enough notability to merit those articles. Much of that notability exists due to the heinous nature of the crimes (sad, but true), but some are because of the subject's notability prior to the crime. As for any other such cases that may arise — and let's hope there are none — they should be considered on a case-by-case basis. My advice is to start with the summary in the main article, then branch out to a separate article if needed. Realkyhick 17:40, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nizah Morris

Hi TerranceDC. You are off to such a great start on the article Nizah Morris that it may qualify to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page under the Did you know... section. The Main Page gets about 4,000,000 hits per day and appearing on the Main Page may help bring publicity and assistance to the article. However, there is a five day from article creation window for Did you know... nominations. Before five days pass from the date the article was created and if you haven't already done so, please consider nominating the article to appear on the Main Page by posting a nomination at Did you know suggestions. If you do nominate the article for DYK, please cross out the article name on the "Good" articles proposed by bot list. Also, don't forget to keep checking back at Did you know suggestions for comments regarding your nomination. Again, great job on the article. -- Jreferee (Talk) 01:35, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Images

In general, if you don't know the copyright of the image, you can't upload it. Usually only "free" pictures can be uploaded - this means not only "without cost" but also "liberty to use them however you like". Appropriate licensing exists in many forms, but images can be released into the public domain, licensed for unrestricted use, or licensed under narrower free licenses like the GFDL, Creative Commons licenses (not all, it must allow commercial uses and modification) or the Free Art License. Otherwise, some images may be allowable under the non-free content criteria, but this definitely requires knowing the copyright holder. When in doubt, contact the source you obtained the image from and ask them about copyright. Other than that, I'm not sure what general advice to give you. This first question to ask is "Where does the image come from?" - one can work from there. If you know the copyright holder and can talk them into releasing the image under a free license, remember to forward any relevant emails to WP:OTRS. WilyD 17:34, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query On 31 July 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Nizah Morris, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

[edit] The purpose of a talk page

Please be careful to leave your comments in the right place. It's inconvenient when you leave messages, such as those you left for Realkyhick, on a userpage, when they belong on a user's talkpage. Nyttend 22:38, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
