Hayashi was known primarily for his skills in fighting (sparring) and was known in his youth for the practice of "Dojo Challenge" while living and training in Okinawa, Japan. A student of numerous traditional Japanese and Okinawan martial arts, Hayashi incorporated a larger and more complete kata syllabus than typical into his teachings.
