"Territory" is Sepultura's sixth official single, and the last of three to be taken from the album Chaos A.D., released in 1993. Like most of the band’s singles, the song is one of the band's best-known songs and remains a concert staple to this day. A music video was filmed for the single which features the band playing and walking through the desert, often daubed in mud, intercut with footage of slums and favelas and footage from Israel and the Palestinian territory, in accordance with the songs references to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This video can be found on the VHS Third World Chaos, which was later released on DVD as part of Chaos DVD, and won the International Viewer's Choice award for best video (Brazil at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards.

“Territory” moreso than any other song on Chaos A.D. showcases the new tribal influences in the band’s music. Igor Cavalera’s drum track for this song is regarded as one of the greatest examples of modern metal drumming.

The song also appears in live form on the band's releases Under A Pale Grey Sky and Live In Sao Paulo (twice on the DVD version of the latter. It also appeared as a live B-Side to the Roots Bloody Roots single, but was not included on the rarities compilation Blood-Rooted, which saw the rest of the recordings from that concert included.

[edit] Artwork

The artwork for the single is not easily discernible. It depicts a monument of some sort. The image is overlayed with the band’s thorned ‘S’ logo.

[edit] Releases

“Territory” saw relatively few variations upon its release compared to the other singles from the album. The CD came in a standard slimline jewel case, rather than the usual digipak, and only one version was released. The single was also released as a 12” vinyl record, with only “Polícia” as a B-side.

The band Between The Buried And Me recorded a cover of this song, which is on their album The Anatomy Of.
