Tepehuanes is one of the municipalities of the Mexican state of Durango. The municipal headtown, Santa Catarina de Tepehuanes, dates back to the early 1800s and was founded by a Spanish family the Navars.
The town was given its name because of the natives, the Tepehuan indians. The Navars founded the first catholic church in that municipality, and named it "Santa Catarina de Tepehuanes". Hence the towns name: Santa Catarina de Tepehuanes.
