Tense (linguistics)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In linguistics, the term tense has two distinct meanings:

  1. As a noun, grammatical tense refers to the way verbs can be marked to indicate whether the action they imply is in the past, the present, or the future.
  2. As an adjective, tense vowels and consonants are (somewhat vaguely) defined as being produced with more "muscular tension" than their lax counterparts.
