Tenkaichi Budokai
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tenkaichi Budokai (天下一武道会 Tenka'ichi Budōkai?, literally "Strongest Under the Heavens") (FUNimation dub: World Martial Arts Tournament) is a fictional Martial Arts Tournament in the Dragon Ball universe. The Tenkaichi Budokai makes its debut appearance in volume 3 of the 42 volume manga series, and is a major focus for the first sixteen volumes of the series. The focus of the Tenkaichi Budokai becomes less as the series continues, due to the primary characters gaining super-human physical abilities that far outclass the abilities of any of the regular competitors.
In Dragon Ball, the Tenkaichi Budokai is held every several years on Papaya Island; located in the southern hemisphere of "Earth".
[edit] Evolution of the Tenkaichi Budokai
Early in the series, the Tenkaichi Budokai was said to have been held every five years; however due to the growing number of competitors, the gap between tournaments was changed to every three years. As the series progressed, the expanding the number of competitors also resulted in the number of competitors for the final competition to be changed from eight finalists to sixteen.
As well as changing the number of competitors allowed to compete, a junior division separated the child fighters from the adult fighters. Later the series, anyone under fifteen years of age was not allowed to compete with adults, even though during the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, the series main character Son Goku at twelve years old became the youngest person to ever make it to the championship round while competing against adults. Goku would go on to make it to the championship round again at age fifteen, and then win the championship against Piccolo Jr. at age eighteen.
In volume 42, The Junior division was discarded when both Pan and Uub are allowed to compete against adult fighters in the Tenkaichi Budokai.
[edit] Tenkaichi Budokai rules
The rules of the Tenkaichi Budokai are similar to the rules of the martial arts tournaments of the real world. The rules of the Tenkaichi Budokai consist of the fighter will lose the match if:
- a fighter touches the outside of the ring
- a fighter hits the other fighter below the belt
- a fighter surrenders
- a fighter kills his or her opponent
- a fighter is knocked unconscious and does not regain consciousness before the tournament announcer counts to 10.
There are judges observing the match and in extenuating circumstances they will alter the rules and provide observational judgments to the above rules.
[edit] 21st Tenkaichi Budokai
The first Budoaki to be depicted, it was used initially to urge Goku and his fellow training classmate Kuririn to continue their training, even though they were stated to already be amongst the strongest martial artists in the world. Their teacher, Muten Roshi, enters himself under the name of Jackie Chun to defeat his students, and thus give them the impression that there were still fighters in the world who were stronger than them.[1]. Muten Roshi nearly lost to Goku in the final round, but gained the victory when he used his supeiror height against Goku's smaller body.

This is the second Budoaki depicted. Tsuru-Sen'nin appears for the first time along with his pupils, Tenshinhan and Chaozu. Tsuru-Sen'nin is introduced as Muten Roshi's rival and this immediately develops rivalry between Tsuru-Sen'nin's pupils and Muten Roshi's. This rivalry continues until Muten Roshi convinces Tenshinhan to use his power for good. Goku makes it to the final round and fights Tenshinhan, but loses the championship.[2][3]

[edit] 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai
The third Budokai in the series' main focus is on the son of Piccolo. Kami competes inside a humans body in a failed attempt to capture Piccolo using the Mafuba technique. Piccolo instead reverses the attack and traps Kami who is then later released by Goku. While everyone was afraid of Piccolo, Goku's main motive was to finally become champion which he finally succeeds in. At the end of the tournament, to everyone's surprise, Goku revives Piccolo with one of Yajirobe's Senzu Beans at the end, essentially beginning Piccolo's change to being good.[4][5][6]

[edit] 24th Tenkaichi Budokai
This Budokai is not depicted in the series but is described later on. The contestants are as follows with Mr. Satan being the champion:
- Mr. Satan
- Punta
- Spopovich
- Jewel
- Killa (anime only)
The Junior Division was also introduced here, the winner being Mr. Satan's daughter, Videl.
[edit] Cell Games
In Dragon Ball Z, the artificial warrior named Cell decides to create his own Tenkaichi Budokai after achieving his perfect state of power. The tournament had the same basic rules of the original Tenkaichi Budokai, but was ran in a more battle royale manner, where anyone who showed up to fight could fight, but all the warriors who showed up to fight did not fight anyone but Cell. The Budokai consists of all of the primary Dragon Ball characters at the time as well as the previous Budokai's champion Mr. Satan (two of Mr. Satan's students showed up in the anime). Insisting that he fight first, Mr. Satan is easily defeated. Goku fights second, the fighter whom Cell had wanted to fight all along. Much to Cell's dismay, Goku eventually forfeits his match to his first child Son Gohan, who ends up destroying Cell and saving the Earth. [7][8]
[edit] 25th Tenkaichi Budokai
After having died against Cell, Goku is allowed to return to Earth for a single day to compete in the 25th Budokai. Goku discovers that several things have changed about the Budokai, now having a Junior Division for child fighters, and a punching machine being the replacement for preliminary rounds. There are also 16 finalists instead of 8, and the champion at the previous tournament (not including the Cell Game) is the final competitor. This Budokai is disrupted when most of the finalists (the Z-Fighters) leave to fight the evil genie Majin Boo. As a result, only five warriors remain at the tournament. A Battle Royale ensues, and #18 forfeits to Mr. Satan in exchange for his prize money.[9][10]
Junior Division:
Trunks ends up winning, defeating Goten and receiving a big cash prize and a chance to fight Mr. Satan.

(**)Mighty Mask's costume was stolen by Goten and Trunks, who used the costume to enter the Adult Division.
There were so many forfeitures from the first round competitors (due to the resurrection of Majin Boo) that the five competitors left were placed in a Battle Royale.
Battle Royale:
Mr. Satan vs. #18 vs. Killah vs. Jewel vs. Mighty Mask (Goten and Trunks)
- Mighty Mask was disqualified for "being two people", when Goten and Trunks' cover was blown by #18.
- #18 lost on purpose in exchange for Mr. Satan giving her money.
[edit] 26th Tenkaichi Budokai
This Budokai is undepicted. Mr. Satan wins, and Mr. Boo (formerly Majin Boo) loses to Mr. Satan on purpose, due to their friendship, allowing Mr. Satan to retain his title again.
[edit] 27th Tenkaichi Budokai
This Budokai is undepicted. Mr. Satan wins, and Mr. Boo loses to Satan on purpose again, with the same reason as the previous tournament.
[edit] 28th Tenkaichi Budokai
Goku decides to enter the 28th Budokai because he hopes that the good reincarnation of Majin Buu (Oob) will be there for him to train as a replacement as Earth's foremost defender. This Tournament consists of twelve finalist, and doesn't have a Junior Division, forcing Goku's granddaughter Pan to enter the Adult Devision. The winner then fights Mr. Satan for the championship.[11]
Match 1 | Match 2 | Match 3 | Match 4 | Match 5 | Match 6 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mo Kekko | Goku | Captain Chicken | Mr. Boo | Trunks | Knock |
Pan♦ | Oob | Karaano | Goten | Otokosuki | Vegeta |
In this Budokai, Vegeta's opponent insults him before the Budokai begins, and Vegeta knocks him out; claiming that he'd forfeit his match. Pan gains the victory over Mo Kekko in the first match, and Goku flies off with Oob to during their match; the second one of the tournament.
[edit] 29th Tenkaichi Budokai

[edit] 31st Tenkaichi Budokai
In Dragon Ball GT, after the fight against Baby, Goku, Majuub, and Pan enter the 31st Budokai. Goku, due to him being turned back into a child, is forced to enter the Junior Division. He actually loses in the first match due to him being tickled out of the arena by his opponent. Pan starts to win in the Adult Division, but forfeits after thinking of becoming just like her grandfather, Mr. Satan. Majoob makes it to the finals against Mr. Satan, but forfeits after Mr. Boo (from inside him) convinces him that Mr. Satan deserves to keep his title.
[edit] 32nd to 63rd Tenkaichi Budokai
All information is unknown. These Budokai are all unseen and undepicted.
[edit] 64th Tenkaichi Budokai
At the end of Dragon Ball GT the 64th Budokai is depicted 100 years into the future with Pan as an old woman watching her grandson Son Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. fight. No Winner is depicted.
