Teniente General Benjamín Matienzo International Airport (IATA: TUCICAO: SANT) is the international airport that serves Tucumán in the north of Argentina. It was built in 1981, and its terminal was inaugurated on 12 October 1986. The Departing Sector was rebuilt in 2005. It can handle big aircraft such as the Boeing 757 (seen at least 10 times), Boeing 767 (seen 4 times from Lan Cargo), McDonnell Douglas DC-10 from Cielos Airlines, seen twice in 2008, and the Antonov An-124 seen once in 1994.

It has 135,000m² of runways, 21,250m² of taxiways, a 6,985m² terminal, 2 hangars of 1,840m², and parking places for 278 cars. It has a small cargo terminal of 50m².

In 1988, it handled 710,000 passengers. In 1998 568,000. And in 2007, just 258,000 passangers. There are plans of more airlines to arrive to Tucumán.

Tucumán International Airport has direct public transport links to San Miguel de Tucumán served by Bus nº 121 to the Bus Terminal Station, through AV. Avellaneda. Route A016 (continuation from Av. Sarmiento) provides access to the City Center. Taxis and rental cars are available as well, as is the case in most airports.

Approximate time and cost to city center:

  • Bus nº 121: fare AR$ 1,60 (U$S 0,50). About 45 Minutes trip. Once every hour (arriving at XX:15, leaving at XX:45). Daily from 8:30am to 9:30pm. Further Information call 0381 4306754 (Dirección de Transporte de la Provincia).
  • Taxi fare AR$ 18 (U$S 6). 12 mins trip. Drive white cabs only. Others are Illegal.
