The TenderGrill sandwich is part of a series of sandwiches designed to expand Burger King's menu with both more sophisticated, adult oriented fare and present a larger, meatier product that appeals to 24-36 adult males.[1] Along with the TenderCrisp and Angus sandwiches, these products are intended to bring in a larger, more affluent adult audience who will be willing to spend more on the better quality products.[2]

[edit] History

Burger King's first broiled chicken sandwich was introduced in the late-1980's and was called the BK Broiler. This sandwich was made with lettuce, tomato and a dill ranch sauce served on a oat dusted roll. In 1988, BK reformulated the BK Broiler into a larger, more male-oriented sandwich served on a Whopper bun, increasing its patty size while changing the ingredients to mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato. In 2002, BK changed the name of the sandwich to Chicken Whopper and added a smaller Chicken Whopper Jr. sandwich[5][6].
In 2004, BK introduced its BK Baguette line of sandwiches that replaced the Chicken Whopper.[7] The Chicken Baguette line was intended as a new health conscious oriented product that got its taste from ingredients instead of fat.
- Chicken Baguette sandwiches in the US:
- The Savory Mustard Chicken Baguette - mustard sauce, lettuce and tomatoes;
- The Santa Fe Chicken Baguette - grilled red and green peppers, onions and a fire-roasted Southwest Sauce (a chipolte based BBQ sauce);
- The Fire-Grilled Smoky BBQ Chicken Baguette - grilled peppers and onions and BBQ sauce.
While discontinued in the US the sandwich is still sold in parts of the European and Australian markets.
In 2005, BK again reformulated its broiled chicken sandwich to the current TenderGrill chicken sandwich.[8] In November, 2007 the sandwich was slightly reformulated again, replacing the honey mustard with mayonnaise.
