Temple Emanuel (Roanoke, Virginia)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Temple Emanuel, founded in 1889, is the only Reform Jewish congregation in Roanoke, Virginia or the surrounding area. The name, Emanuel, is Hebrew for "God is with us" and is a name shared by over 60 other Reform congregations in the US, including Temple Emanu-El, the first Reform congregation in New York City.

Temple Emanuel's membership has been growing in recent years, and currently stands at just over 200 families. Since 1996, the congregation has been led by Rabbi Kathy Cohen, who was ordained by the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1988 and served thereafter at Rockdale Temple in Cincinnati and Temple Israel in Westport, Connecticut. The Temple does not currently employ a cantor, but instead makes use of a cantorial soloist and, once a month, a choral group known as the Chailites.

Temple Emanuel is located at 1163 Persinger Rd S.W., Roanoke, VA 24015.
