Temoaya is the seat of the municipality of the same name in Mexico State, Mexico.[1]It is located 18 kilometres (11 mi) from Toluca and 85 kilometres (53 mi) from Mexico City. It is a very cold place because of its altitude which is 2,750 metres (9,022 ft) above mean sea level.[2]
Temoaya came from the Nahuatl temoa (to go down) and yan (effect), so Temoaya means place which goes down. Temoaya was founded officially on September 18, 1720, by the archbishop don Joseph de Lansiego y Eguilás. It was established because the viceroy of Nueva España(Mexico) ordered putting all the Otomies together to be evangelized.[2]
