Television in Spain was introduced after the World War II, in 1953.

  • Televisión Española [1] (Spanish television): public service broadcasting network, with both public and commercial financing. The first broadcast was in October 28, 1956, retaining the monopoly of nation-wide transmission until 1989 (some regional public service networks were launched in the early 80s). It is composed of two channels: TVE1 and TVE2.
  • Antena 3 [2]: One of the nation-wide private television networks that received a broadcasting licence in 1989. Antena 3 airs general programs such as news, movies, reality shows, sport events and quizzes.
  • Telecinco [3] - One of the nation-wide private television networks that received broadcasting license in 1989. Telecinco airs general programs such as news, movies, reality shows, sport events and quizzes.
  • Cuatro [4] - Replaced Canal+ Spain after the end of its terrestrial analogue broadcast in November 7, 2005. Cuatro, owned by Sogecable, airs general programs such as news, movies, documentaries, reality shows, sport events and quizzes.
  • La Sexta [5]: The last nation-wide private station, owned by the Mexican corporation Televisa and several Spanish production companies. It started to broadcast in in March 2006. It was born with some technical limits, since its analogue broadcast covered, at the most, 85% of the Spanish population.

  • FDF Telecinco [13]: Sports. Currently it airs also some EurosportNews programs.
  • Telecinco 2 [14]: general entertainment, TV series and movies.
  • Antena.nova [15]: lifestyle, TV series and movies.
  • Antena.neox [16]: children/teen channel.
  • Clan TVE [17]: children/teen channel. Timeshared with TVE 50 Años until it closed, Clan TVE is now 24 hours. Also on digital satellite & cable operators.
  • Docu TVE - Documentary channel
  • TeleHit. Pop-rock music channel recorded in Mexico. La Sexta's 2nd television channel.

Another channel was TVE 50 Años, broadcasting events from the past 50 years of TVE. The service closed on 1 January 2007
