Television in Singapore

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Consolidation in the media industry, which came into effect on 1 January 2005, led to the broadcasting industry reverting to a monopoly held by MediaCorp. The two channels run by SPH MediaWorks, Channel U and Channel i, were transferred to MediaCorp, which closed down Channel i by citing it was not viable to run so many English channels when the market is small.

Hence, there are a total of 8 free-to-air television stations, including TVMobile, Singapore's first digital broadcasting service telecast on SBS Transit buses.

[edit] History

Broadcasting developed from a single terrestrial channel operated by the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) in the 1960s to 1993. When SBC was rebranded as Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS), it launched Channel 5, Channel 8, and Prime 12. A reorganisation in 1999 saw the creation of MediaCorp and a redistribution of programming among the channels. In 2001, the government allowed Singapore Press Holdings (SPGH) to offer competition in the TV market. The merger was forced by the losses sustained by the parties. Because they both offered high quality programme schedules, the copyright licensing costs were high while advertising revenues from a relatively small consumer market remained low.
